Colorado HS teacher compared Bush to Hitler

This story has made national news. It also has a disturbing local connection.

I knew this clown when he was a high school student in Birmingham during the mid 1990s. It is quite disturbing not only to hear his comments, but to know that he is a teacher. He was known to be not only a pretty big drug abuser but also a racist (especially against Black and Asian people) who was rumored to have Nazi connections of some sort (how ironic). How the heck did he end up at the other end of the (equally distasteful) spectrum?

**I hope calling this guy out doesn't violate the terms of use of this forum, but I thought it was important to bring this up after seeing it on Fox2.**

I like what Jon Stewart said, "When you compare people to Hitler, you insult them, you insult yourself, and quite frankly, you insult Hitler. That man worked to long and to hard to be that evil." Something like that anyway.

Llyn, Fox2 showed his picture and played a clip of a student's recording of one of his class "lectures". I double checked with the national stories (Drudge, Fox, MSNBC, etc.) as well as the Denver media.

could be worse:

courtesy of Drudge:

Prof resigns over graphic video
A Grand Rapids Community College professor resigned after allegedly showing ten seconds of a sexually explicit video in his criminal justice class.

Professor Samuel Naves resigned after the story appeared on the front page of the GRCC newspaper. ...

The campus paper said students were watching clips about criminal justice from Naves’ e-mail when he flipped past the clip. According to the paper, students begged to see it. Naves warned them it was an explicit clip of a man having sex with a pig.

...

... The dean said Naves is no longer teaching his classes and that the behavior may have violated state and local laws.

...
Deliverance us from evil ....

Rustic, I'm not so sure that the GRCC case is worse in the larger sense of things. The Colorado case involves a person with a very sketchy background attempting to unduly influence 10th graders (15-16 yr olds) versus a person showing a 10 second pornographic clip to (consenting, "begged to see it") adults (18 and over).

I dunno MDG, some doofus HS teacher blathering on apparently about his crackpot ideology (how that "unduly influence[s]" HS kids I'm not sure ... but anyway) vs a college prof creating an inappropriate academic environment by bringing and showing bizzare pornography (unrelated to his curriculum of course) ... IMO the college prof is worse just from the sexual harrassment POV ... now maybe since you apparently know the HS teacher personally you know something we don't ... but who knows what kinda sicko the college prof might be if he is getting pig sex tapes in his professional e-mail, imagine what HIS HS friends might be saying about him right now ...

Rustic, several points for you.

1. Most people know that 15 and 16 year old teenagers are more impressionable than adults over the age of 18.

2. The GRCC incident was apparently after class and the students themselves requested to see it. The CO incident was during class with little to no choice by the students since it was under the guise of their academic lesson (unrelated to the curriculum of course...rants about the State of the Union, capitalism, Bush, etc. don't have anything to do with World Geography).

3. Bennish was previously warned about his antics in the classroom (previous complaint by a student and parent, "settled" after a meeting with them and school officials). This is a pattern in his behavior. As I recall, he has thumbed his nose at authority since his mid teenage years. This type of behavior (including his sketchy past) does not make for good qualities in a teacher.

Bush bashing by teacher spurs threats

Colorado man compares president to Hitler; angry callers target Mich. family, student who taped lesson.

Death threats are certainly wrong, however, I wouldn't be so quick to necessarily believe his parents claims, given the type of behavior they permitted from their sons as teenagers. Also, based on that same line of reasoning, I'd hate to see what his mother is teaching those elementary schools students.

Ace of Spades Exclusive: Jay Bennish's Geography Pop Quiz

You will have 10 minutes to complete this test. Please mark all answers clearly. You will be judged on your knowledge of world geography, of both the actual and "holistic" types.

1. What river did conquistador Hernando DeSoto discover?
a) The Mississippi River
b) The Missouri River
c) The Rio Grande
d) What river did he discover? Discover? As if there weren't a diverse and ecologocially-sensitive people living there for 5000 peaceful years of enlightened communal property sharing before. Yeah, kind of like Hitler "discovered" the Sudetenland, right? You know what I'm talkin' about.

2. Which of the following natural resources does the US have the least of?
a) Uranium
b) Gold
c) Forestland/Timber
d) Freedom. It's as precious as gold and as bright as diamonds, and that's the name of that tune. Instead of drilling in the Arctic for oil, Bush should be drilling in his own black heart for freedom, baby.

3. What separates England from continental Europe?
a) The Irish Sea
b) The English Channel
c) A history of promoting human slavery, both actual and constructive, in the form of the vicious capitalism imposed on the world by the cannons of British warships, and a jingoistic militaristic fascism in the form of a disgusting monarchy and repressive class system. You should write this **** in your notebook, kid. This is all pure gold I'm giving you here.
d) Both b and c, but mostly c. They got the Chunnel and **** now to bridge the first one.

4. I just sparked up before class and I've got a serious case of the munchies. Anyone have any Doritos, Ho-Ho's, or even Chuckles-brand licorice treats?
a) I've got Doritos (bring them up and grade your own test)
b) I've got Ho-Ho's (bring them up and choose your own grade for this semester)
c) I've got Chuckles (stay in your seat; I'm waitin' to see if someone has anything better; plus, those black ones taste like filth)
d) I've got a fresh cheesesteak sandwhich drippin' hot grease in my desk (meet me out in the parking lot and we'll share some cheestake and spleef; plus, you can have my sweet ride, a 1984 Chevette with a picture of Marvin the Martian in the hatchback window)

5. The film The Wall seems pretty incomprehensible, but it makes perfect sense if you watch it high.
a) Not really a question here.
b) I'm just sayin', I got really baked last night and the whole thing just really gelled for me.
c) Ralph McQaurrie's animations are really freaky and scary when you're high, though. Jesus! I swear, that one judge looks like a butt-hole or somethin'. I'm tellin' you, I think he's a giant dumper in a barrister's wig.
d) I guess no one has a cheesesteak, huh? Okay, how about those Chuckles?

Put down your pencils. Let's skip the test and go outside and lay in the sun and just "rap" about current events. Or other interesting topics, like if the universe really exists, or if it's just some magical vision dreamed by a cosmic unicorn.
I know I smell a cheesesteak. Who's holding out on me?

Seeing that this guy's parents have lawyers, and you're calling him a Nazi here, I'd be a little more careful for Lowell's sake.

And thank you, I choose with whom I'll align myself, I don't let young Birmingham punks choose.

Pffft perhaps you should be a lot more careful and take your own advice for Lowell's sake. I also have an attorney and do not appreciate you accusing me of calling someone a Nazi. Thank you in advance.

Also, who is "a young Birmingham punk"? Perhaps only the person you are sticking up for. I am not from Birmingham. I am from Detroit. It has not been a pretty picture that you've been so far off to date, and it won't be a pretty picture in the future.

The concept of Bush and his speeches being full of familiar Protestant religious phrases in which he uses very popular hymns, Bible verses and vernacular language but substitutes nationalistic rhetoric for the references to God and Jesus has been discussed quite a bit over the years by folks who come from a church upbringing.

Unfortunately the folks who are the loudest but don't neccessarily represent the majority of evangelical Christians (Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and other fundamentalists) buy into it hook line and sinker seemingly without even realizing that Bush just said American when it should have been God. However there is a sizable number of evangelical Christians who are beginging to publicly denounce Bush's hijacking of Christian phraseology and Christianity for nationalistic purposes.

I say all this about Bush's hijacking of familiar religious language to say that this is exactly how Hitler rose to power in Germany. He got the evangelical church of Germany, which represented the vast majority of church going Germans and a sizable majority of all Germans, to buy into his nationalistic fervor. He also hamstrung the Catholic church through bribery and blackmail which they fell for. Once he had diabled the church and the "good Christians" of Germany and swept them up as leaders in his nationalistic fervor, he instituted the SS, started persecuting Jews, secretly holding prisoners without trial, began invading non-aggressor nations, started executing these secret prisoners and on and on we slide into the depths of nationalistic zeal.

So it's not that far of a stretch to compare Bush to Hitler. Is Bush to the point of a Hitler yet? I'd say no, but the similarities between the rise of power between the two are eerily similar.

Despite the fact that I am anti-Bush, I too think this guy overstepped his boundaries. It's not his job to teach or influence his students as to what he thinks or believes about the current (or any) administration. His opinion about who is what doesn’t belong in the classroom.

One could say his style of teaching is Hitleresque...

Hmmm. Reporting what myself as well as what many others have heard about someone IS NOT the same thing as actually calling someone that name. Furthermore, reporting a rumor IS NOT the same thing as reporting the claim as fact.

Pffft, are your true colors starting to show? I bet you're one of those extreme liberals/radicals that claims to support minorities, yet when push comes to shove you'll side with any type of person as long as your agenda is pushed.
