5 minutes ago five DPD cruises came to my street with sirens blaring. They've taped off our section of Saint Paul. Channels 4 and 7 are here, too. I stuck my head out the front door to ask what was going on and a cop said, "Get back inside, sir! We have a situation." An ambulance just drove up and someone ran by the front of my house with a gurney. More details soon. |

The Detroit News just called me. Someone attempted a carjacking, then ran into Mt. Zion church, killed someone in the church, then took his own life. |

The police shot Collins by my front yard. I watched him being taken on a stretcher. He was alive, because he had one of those breathing bag thingies. |

Annnnnnnnnnd we're out. The police left and the TV crews have gone on. Quite a bit of excitement. For those of you watching the coverage on TV, I'm sorry about the litter. It'd been very windy this weekend and I haven't had a chance to pick up yet. |

Itsjeff, how are you? Seeing this tragedy unfold outside your home can be extremely difficult to process and reach some type of resolution that can restore your sense of safety. If you can, send me an email to neilmc at comcast dotnet. You, and the others involved, are in my prayers, such as they are, this night. I wish you well |

wow. my dad called me from georgia with the news, about 30 minutes ago; i hadn't yet heard. it seems that we have places in our country that are held as sacred - and when a tragedy such as this occurs in a venue where we hope and strive to have all differences set aside, if only for a moment - it makes one wonder, where can peace be found? prayers to all affected. |

ItsJeff, I'm happy to hear that no harm came to you. Still, it can be damaging to the spirit to be in the presence of tragedy. It will play on the mind for some time. So I send you a virtual hug. [hug] Unfortunately, I was once present at a similar event. It's like winning a reverse lottery. The silver lining is that nothing happens to you. Channels 4 and 7 had video of the body being rushed by my house on the gurney. My next door neighbor has an 11 year old daughter. I'm sure that was a fun conversation. Me? I'm more upset about the innocents lost in the church than this punk killing himself. (I reported earlier that I was told that he was killed by a police officer. On the news it said he killed himself.) Your concern is appreciated but not needed. Thank you, though. |

Some observations: Once the situation had settled a bit, I ventured out my front door. The police (there were easily 15 of them) were at all times professional and courteous to me. A police chaplain offered her services. I was interviewed briefly by an officer who was very professional. (I didn't have much to say since I didn't see the guy shoot himself.) My dad was more bemused than anything else. He watched this whole thing through my front window as if he were watching TV. "Wow, look at that" he'd say when something happened. I thought at any minute he was going to make popcorn. He phoned his wife, "Honey, you won't believe why I'm going to be late...." and gave her all the details. By now I'm sure my entire family and all the Chicago relatives know. I can't believe I didn't think to take pictures. It's very disconcerting to open your front door and see a dozen cruisers, 2 vans, an ambulance, 4 TV news trucks and 15 officers all looking at you. Reminded me of that scene from the Blues Brothers when they go pay their taxes. Does anyone know how the News was able to find me? They must have heard the address of the shooting from the police radio, but it was two houses down from me. |

Jeff, There are reference tools available to reporters whereby you can look up the names of people who live on the same street ...they no doubt heard the address and started looking for people living nearby. |

Hell, from the Bresser's cross index...I could find out where you work and a phone number...learned about that reference book from my father during a phase he lapsed into selling real estate. They have them in most major libraries, too. Used to have offices in the New Center area, but dunno where they are now...some old fraternity brothers used to work there in the late eighties. |
