First BRC comment and now Watson's false accusations which is just going to hurt any sort of revitalization and increase the already strong segregation that exists in this area. Enough is enough!

As a non-Black Detroiter I have had enough of this racism and feel alienated by the city's leaders. I would like to organize a strong protest against the CC by Detroiters who have had enough of their city council alienating them because they are not Black and those who are Black and are sick and tired of this council and their false accusations. Who's in and how do we get this started?

I'm thinking we should do it sometime in March outside city hall. What day would make a strong impact? The nice thing about a protest is you don't need much money-just people and signs.

I'd have to agree with Cmubryan on that one. As a white Detroiter (there are still a good number of us) our elected officials don't care about ANY non-black residents, it doesn't matter if they are Asian, Arabic, Hispanic, White, etc.

Why whine about instututional racism in the burbs, we got plenty right here at home.

And I still don't know where I'm supposed to spend my money!!

How is that racist? What does that have to do with race? There is a white person on the council-what about her? There is nothing racist about that at all.

Back to the protest-so I have 3 in?

Ltoriva, your a joke. He said a similar thing in reference to the Warren CC, does he hate white people too?

"If they close the zoo," he said, "we've always got the Warren City Council."

I agree with LBP, the council DOES belong in a zoo. and his statement is peanuts compared to the plantation statement, notice he didint bring race into his comment. Anytime the black man feels threatened he plays the race card *yawn* I am so tired of it and tired of the city and their on going bullshit. This is why we are moving this summer to Charlevoix, no more listening to Detroit bullshit for me!

I'm not so sure it's a response to feeling threatened. It's more like certain council members wait for opportunities like this one to dust off the old "us vs. them" rhetoric and pander to the more impressionable members of their voter base. It makes them look like heroes to some (and racist clowns to everyone else).

I'm jealous...

I hate to break it to all ya'll but the Council could care less if a bunch of white Detroiters stage a protest thirteen floors below their offices. They know who votes for them, they know who their supporters are and don't necessarily care about getting the votes of the small percentage of whites left.

If you really want them to pay attention, get petitions to get 'em recalled and *then* protest.

I guess that super bowl hangover is officially gone. I believe that the plantation statement was directed to the state for putting a deadline on the $4 million ("you can't buy black people") Why was there a deadline on money you were giving anyway? LBP knew exactly what was doing by also including the Warren city county in that statement. CYA....anyone over 50 saying blacks should be caged (monkey reference). I personally appreciate any non-blacks that have not giving up on Detroit. But what you're feeling now is exactly have black people feel at least 80% of the time.

" The people on this council belong in the Zoo, not deciding the fate of the Zoo."

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson
Detroit News, 2/21/06

Mr. Patterson clearly resorted to hyperbole and sarcasm in order to make his comments more "quote-worthy" for the newspapers. However, that's still a far cry from racism.

His central argument was that people who would close one of Detroit's great cultural jewels should not be making decisions about the future of those jewels.

To put it another way, here's another quote on the subject of Detroit's jewels.

"You don't sell your jewels for the price of polish."

- Mayor Coleman A. Young

Detroit faced a multitude of challenges with its economy and budget during Mayor Young's tenure. In spite of it all, he did close the Detroit Zoo as the Detroit City Council tried to do last week.

Of course, he also didn't close the Aquarium as the Mayor did last year.

Fine a protest or march but SOMETHING. It made a difference 40-50 years ago in Southern cities, it could make a difference here. Anything to shine attention on the travesty occuring. It definitely will make more of a difference then what else we would be doing that day (sitting on our butts).

But Fremeneck, the council did not accept the mayors proposal. Its his choice to close the zoo, not the council's.

The mayor could have chosen to lay off incompetent people at PDD or DEGC or the Health department and kept the zoo operational.

Its his choice, not the council.....

100 years ago, it wasn't uncommon for black people to be called or be perceived as "monkeys belong in a zoo." Many folks today still think black people belong "in a zoo."

L. Brooks Patterson has never been optimistic on strengthening race relations or regionalism. Instead, he joins the idiocy bandwagon and criticizes the city "clownsil" for doing their duties. Don't even dare defend his actions.

If it was Coleman Young saying things the suburbs would all be in a cry and pointing their fingers back at the city.
Now that it IS L Brooks Patterson saying things the suburbs are all in a cry and pointing their fingers back at the city.
I just don't get it.
Every county uses the Zoo why should only the city pay for it sure when it was built what suburbs were there really?

The DETROIT Zoo was first in DETROIT prior to it's move. Using your logic perhapswe should call the DETROIT Pistons something else, and the DETROIT Lions when they were in Pontiac shouldn't have been that at all. Oh yeah Crains DETROIT covers other areas too, imagine that!

cause no one is fighting over the Lions, Pistons etc, and I think its stupid for the Pistons to place in Auburn Hills, but thats ANOTHER mistake the city has made, not providing them with a venue to play in.

The city should be doing everything they can to keep the zoo open, who cares who OWNS it, keep it opened. It belongs to us all. Whens the last time YOU were at the zoo supporting it? More non-Detroiters go to the zoo than Detroiters, guess the suburbs are REALLY supporting it with their money instead of paying lip service to it.

Ltorivia, I beg of you, for the sake of your future and financial well being, please change your major from Sociology to Economics or Finance. You are otherwise going to reach 50 and realize that all of the energy you had invested in hate theory has failed to reap you any benefits. Once you discover that human beings in general (regardless of their pigmentation) tend to treat one another with indifference and/or scorn when given the opportunity, you will see that you've been pointing your finger in the mirror the entire time.

The way that the council acts, they should be in a zoo. It has nothing to do with their ethnicity but the way these fools act.
The comments made, the bizarre spending sprees, the accusations...the list is endless. Act professional and maybe some people will actually take them serious.

Miss Cleo - It is the Detroit region and if it were to be supported financially by the entire region it should still have the word Detroit in it. To think otherwise makes no logical sence.

How about The Detroit Metro Zoo?

It sure as hell ain't gonna be called the Oakland County Zoo, unless OC wants to start footing the entire bill, buys the assets (land, infrastructure, animals etc...), and takes full responsibility for it. I can't wait for the regional tax to come up to support it....

Even if the entire state of Michigan were to solely support it - I would think Detroit should still be in the title. It is in the Detroit region and is a regional attraction.

and on and on and on.... blah blah blah
