Damn http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20060210/NEW S11/60210012 "...Born James Yancey, the musician turned 32 last week. He was a champion of Detroit's urban music scene. When hip-hop was largely being dominated by the east and west coasts, he put a distinct Detroit sound on many national acts. Earlier this week, he celebrated his birthday with a new album release, "Donuts.” "Jay Dee was the man with the beats,” said Mark Hicks, who has been on the hip-hop scene since the early ‘90s and is a former manager of the group D12. Hicks got the word that Jay Dee died from Detroit rapper Proof, who sent him a message via his Blackberry. “I remember when he was selling beats back in '95, ‘96 for like 100 or 200 bucks," Hicks said. Beats are the instrumental tracks that form the backbone of hip-hop music. "Everybody went to him. He was selective. Even back then, you could see him being a producer in the long run just on how he made the music. He took the artists and said, 'This is how you should lyrically say this.' “He was a prodigy. If you saw him in the studio, it was like he was the man." Jay Dee worked with artists including A Tribe Called Quest, Common, Erykah Badu, D’Angelo and Janet Jackson." |

Wow! Aiw, you have got to be the most assanine prick on this forum (besides Gannon and his denial of being a racist). Just because a young, Black male dies does not necessarily insinuate that he was a victim of gun violence or Black on Black crime. Nice attempt at a "provocative" post. Your sense of humor is the weakest I've ever encountered. May J. Dilla's soul rest in peace. |

This is incredibly sad. I am crushed to have heard this. He was one of the most talented ever to do music. He was a genius! Gone far far too soon! Rest in peace. Detroit has lost another one. |

My comment was not meant to demean (I knew JDee and the cause of his demise); only remind us of the cancer in the streets and how some can and do look at the only way a young black man dies is through violence. |

haha... gooched! RIP JayDee, but I got a bit of an issue here. A lot of the rappers that make their change from "the Detroit sound" move as far away as possible. JayDee, Bizarre... whoever else I can't name. What the hell? |

Dilla was more of a beatsmith than a rappper if I'm correct and as such I believe the opportunity to work with a variety of artist presented itself more readily than if he was just a rapper. Also, until recently or following the re-emergence of East Coast hip-hop Detroit was a hard place for a M.C./Producer. During the golden age 83-93 it was really hard to "get on" if you was from "The D". One would have more of an opportunity to "get on" with Techno/House rather than rap during that period which inspired alotta artist to believe that you have to hit N.Y to try and blow up. That my perspective. |

Treez has it right on. JayDee "made his change" from The Pharcyde (LA) and Tribe/DeLa (NYC) +many more. Genesyxx- why do you have an issue with someone who wants to experience more than just one city? Shoot, if I had the means I'd keep a home in L.A. too! (well, maybe not L.A.!) Favorite JayDee beats: -"Runnin'" - The Pharcyde -"Itsoweezee remix" - De La Soul -"The Light - Common/Erykah Badu |

http://www.metrotimes.com/edit orial/story.asp?id=8889 "If Detroit hip hop has a sound, James "Jay Dee/J-Dilla" Yancey defined it. Comparing him to hip-hop legends who achieved similar feats in their hometowns — Houston's DJ Screw or Brooklyn's Notorious B.I.G. — would be insufficient, though. Screw's chopped-and-screwed sound has made Houston the flavor of the month. But it's a regional flavor. Biggie is a Brooklyn benchmark, admired by the hip-hop world. But outside of Los Angeles' Gorilla Black, he's not imitated. Yancey, who switched his moniker from Jay Dee to J-Dilla a few years ago, caused some of hip hop's best to literally change the way they make music. When Dilla was helping to develop Slum Village in the early '90s, he gave A Tribe Called Quest leader Q-Tip a beat tape. Hence, Dilla soon became the foundation of A Tribe Called Quest's production team, the Ummah. The results: The final two albums from A Tribe Called Quest, Beats, Rhymes & Life and The Love Movement, sounded very much like Slum Village projects. Q-Tip and Phife Dawg spent much of the album mimicking the rhyme styles of SV's T3 and Baatin." |

"At press time it's said that his kidneys, or even lupus, played a role. He was 32" It's not an either or, lupus causes kidney failure. From the sound of it he suffered from lupus causing his kidneys to give out which can be a slow and tortuous progression. My guess would be that he's been on dialysis for awhile and some secondary complication from the lupus/kidney failure lead to his death. Sad. |
