Marygrove College's Institute for Detroit Studies is putting together a panel discussion about preservation with three guest speakers:

Royce A. Yeater, AIA
Midwest Regional Director, National Trust for Historic Preservation
“Preservation and the Revitalization of America’s Cities”

Francis Grunow
Executive Director, Preservation Wayne
“Preserving Downtown: The Politics of Perseverance”

James A. Turner
Michigan Advisor, National Trust for Historic Preservation
“Strong Neighborhoods Build Stronger Cities”

7:30 p.m. * Thursday, February 23, 2006 * Madame Cadillac Building *
Marygrove College * 8425 West McNichols Road (at Wyoming) *

Metropolitan Detroit has hundreds of historic buildings, neighborhoods, landmarks, and public spaces. As Camilo Jose Vergara observes, Detroit’s downtown contains the "third-largest concentration of pre-Depression skyscrapers in the world." Many of these buildings are now neglected, leading the National Trust for Historic Preservation to include them on its 2005 list of Eleven Most Endangered Historic Places. (See http://www.nationaltrust.org/1 1Most/2005/detroit.html.)

Great! Thanks, Kathleen! I checked Marygrove's site earlier, and saw the info on the front page, but was unable to find anything additional. I will definitely be there.

Royce, Jim and Francis gave a wonderful presentation on preservation. Francis even referenced DetroitYes for his slide show pictures.

Darwinism: I was there, as was Everydayislikesunday and Jelk. Anyone else?

I saw several Preservation Wayne colleagues in attendance as well.

I concur that this was a terrific program. Frank Rashid's introductory remarks set the tone for the evening, and from there, the three speakers Royce Yeater, Francis Grunow, and Jim Turner waxed eloquent on historic preservation and the situation in Detroit. Each speaker brought something unique to the table!! Quite refreshing, to say the least.

Thanks to the Institute for Detroit Studies, Marygrove College for continuing their excellent Defining Detroit series!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this event. I'm looking forward to attending more events coordinated by the IDS.

Kathleen - it was nice to see you again. Jelk, Darwinism, and Neilr - sorry I missed the opportunity to meet more forumers!

I'm glad I attended the event. It was well presented and it's always a treat for me to attend something at Marygrove's Madam Cadillac Hall. It is such a beautifully preserved place in Detroit.
