I know all of you are not into traffic signals but you already notice there are LOTS of new ones are installing all over the city including 8 Mile, Van Dyke, Hoover, Gratiot and other intersections. My friend also told me there's a new one at Fort and Griswold in downtown at Campus Martius. Here's two questions that my friend wants to know. 1. Will we see more new ones in downtown soon? 2. The old ones in downtown with "stop signs" at some intersections,is the city planing to take them down? |

Well, traffic signals are all well and good but I would be a little more excited if they started enforcing basic traffic laws and what not. Enforcing the smallest crimes will lead to a greater crackdown on the net crime rate within the city. Yeah, I know, I am channeling CL. |

I don't know about Hoover, but all the rest are state roads so it's likely an MDOT initiative. |

The Real Reason Really.. this is the reason. Total conversion of the traffic light system in the U.S. to L.E.D. Will have massive impact in reducing energy consumption. |

They are part of a grand from the USDOT and MDOT to upgrade traffic control devices in Detroit. More are on the way. they are better timed and have LED lights, use less energy and the blubs have a longer life. |

You may not see total conversion to LED lights in Michigan (and other parts of the country). Yes, there are many advantages to LEDs, they do use less energy to operate. However, they are prone to icing because they generate less heat than incandescent lights. Of course, the manufacturers could incorporate a heating element in the lens for clearing ice. It'll be interesting to see if LEDs are adopted by many agencies here. |

Livernoisyard: "Halt." I think it's diffrent for stop signs though. Anyone know Latin or Italian? He probably speaks those better than German now anyway. |

Being somewhat fluent "auf deutsch," it's probably "Halt! Vorfahrt gewähren." |

German word for stop is "HALT!" but stop signs are the same as here in the good ole U.S. of A., "STOP." "Halt! Vorfahrt gewaehren" is the meaning of the stop sign. |

What kills me is that there are the new lights going up right in the middle of the CBD that are on metal "booms" which hang out over the road. They give a clean appearence, are easier to see, and are what is found almost everywhere across the country. A block away, you may have a pair of "classic" traffic lights, which may date from the 1950s or 1960s. These are smaller, made completely of steel, and are strung over the intersection from "booms" as well, supported by wires from the top of a pole. Identifyable by their classic appearence and unique details of an era cone by: columns with vertialve lines for poles, and ornamental shells at the base. There are two pairs right in front of the Fox. These lights used to be on every corner in the city, and a major replacement project is currently underway it seems, even though these signals have been doing their job just for for the past 40 or so years. Another block away, and the newest light are going, up which are the typical cheap Michigan design. Known as "durasigs", these newest signals are stung over an intersection witha million different lights hung from them at many angles. They are very large, and are occassionally hit by semis if they are hanging too low. They are hard to see because of the angle in which they are strung over a corner. I don't think a single other state in the country uses a cheap style like this. On top of all of that, they're just plain ugly. Why is it that the nice downtown boom signals only are on selected intersections, while nearby the ugly new Durasigs hang imposingly over other corners? You would think they would want to have a STANDARD system in place, just as the "classic" design was a standard during the late 50s-the 70s. And maybe since the rest of the country uses many variations of the boom design, we could join the club and do it too. And they look better! |
