Just in case you are too busy to click the link... Scheduled for completion by year-end are the following: o Two plazas and pavilions — at Rivard Street and Gabriel Richard Park — will be complete. They will offer exciting features including water gardens and fountains, a carousel, interpretive markers and innovative night lighting, along with amenities such as restrooms, concessions and rentals. o Two miles of continuous, uninterrupted RiverWalk should be operational, from the Renaissance Center to Mt. Elliott Park. Additionally, portions of the RiverWalk also will be open at the Civic Center into Hart Plaza. The basic thread of the design for the RiverWalk pathway will be an average of 62 feet in width, with two paths — one for pedestrian traffic, and one for wheeled traffic, such as cycling and rollerblading. Generous native landscaping will be incorporated into the walk’s design. o The walkway will vary in look and feel along the river, based on the shoreline, existing structures and conditions. o The Bates Street platform construction will be complete, and work will have commenced on the RiverWalk that will cross the platform. o The Dequindre Cut greenway, a pedestrian pathway that will extend from the riverfront to nearby neighborhoods, will extend north about a mile from the RiverWalk into the neighborhoods of the city. This rails-to-trails transformation will allow the opportunity to access the riverfront without crossing major streets. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring with completion by end of 2006. o The remaining two silos located on the riverfront are scheduled to be demolished, paving the way for development. Already, the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation is aggressively marketing several parcels along the riverfront. o Construction also will begin on the Port Authority terminal. o Construction is anticipated to begin on the next phase of the Tri-Centennial State Park & Harbor focusing on sustainable environmental elements late in 2006. o With the half-mile of RiverWalk now open behind the GM Renaissance Center, along with the Civic Center walk, programming will be launched, connecting to the many activities held annually along the riverfront. “We are excited about the enormous amount of activity that we have planned this year,” Nelson said. “We are looking forward to completion of construction of a transformed riverfront with access to all.” |

Aim high...aim high. Kind of like Detroit should not strive to be Chicago, but rather try to be a really good Memphis or something. |

Good and Memphis in the same sentence. Isn't that an oxymoron? |

will someone please explain why they had the groundbreaking ceremony for the port authority terminal about 1.5 years ago, yet they're not planning to start construction until sometime later this year? as i recall, the politicians were saying during the ceremony that the terminal would be completed before the 2005 major league baseball all-star game. is the answer to my question the same as why they had the book-cadillac re-hab groundbreaking ceremony nearly 3 years ago? |

This was posted on urbanplanet in response to a question about terminal progress
quote:Yes, progress on the site has been painstakingly slow, but positive. It's a very challenging site for numerous reasons. Once we got in there for additional sub-surface investigations, following the groundbreaking, we were confronted with shoddy seawall tie-backs (those seawalls date back to the 1920s!), lack of sewer lines, and of course new homeland security regulations that add cost to a project. Over the past year and a half we've hired our project management team (led by SDG Design) and Architectural/Engineering firm (led by Hamilton Anderson & Associaties). And, together, we went through an extensive 8 month permit process, finally obtaining our approvals this past Fall by the MDEQ and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. We've developed a very unique off-shore wharf concept that will allow us to venture into deeper water, and away from the shoddy seawalls and raw water intakes that line the shoreline. This off-shore wharf will be able to handle the largest cruise ship that currently sails the Great Lakes, the C. Columbus. We'll do some minor shoreline/seawall work which should allows us to handle smaller craft. Our goal is to have site plans and elevations out by early February. We should have something in the press about that time, and more than likely, will have this information available on our web site at www.portdetroit.com. Again, thanks for your interest! Feel free to check back with me down the road! John Kerr Director of Economic Development & Grants Management Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority

thanks, eric. that's very informative stuff. it continues to frustrate me that so many michigan/detroit politicians insist on having groundbreaking ceremonies so far in advance of all required approvals/financing being in place. oh well. |

speaking of groundbreakings, our transit center will be ready in 2008, so it seems a ground breaking ceremony occurs 3 years before the certificat of occupancy. 3 years to put up a tent? don't get me wrong though, i'm a big fan of the TC and hopefully we'll have a merged regional system then. |
