Came across this photo in an old family album. It was the grocery store of Conrad Volkert, a cousin, who lived on the 2nd story. The store was on the NE corner of Oakland at Clay. If any of you happens to pass that corner, let me know if the building is still there. I suspect not. Photo is from c. 1900.

I looked it up on maps.a9.com and it does show images of this intersection. Hope it helps! 0&mstr=Oakland%20Ave&ypLoc=Oak land%20ST%20%26%20Clay%20St%2C %20Detroit%2C%20MI%2048211&mll =42.3769,-83.0665,,,42.3768086 ,-83.06647916,maps.a9.com intersection of Oakland at Clay |

There is a similar building still extant on the SE corner of the intersection. |

Northeast corner is marked in red dot. Looks like the structure and houses in the pic are gone. |

Yup, that aerial shot clinches it; the building is long gone. Pity. The one on the SE corner looks more 1920-ish, I think, Haydenth, but thanks for the effort; appreciated. |

Great photo Ray1936. Terraserver.microsoft.com has it there on 3/28/1999, but gone by 4/10/2002. I used to drive past it regularly. On the corner, it had a hardware store sign with the word ‘hardware’ spelled wrong. |

Thank you, 48202. Cousin Con Volkert had a second grocery store on W. Warren between 23rd and 24th...but I know that building is long gone. He provided the funds in 1923 for my grandparents to emigrate from Germany. Good thing for me or I'd not be here...... |
