I've gotta admit the Matt Millen character at the end did make me laugh tho. The rest, eh, typical BS.

Those were some amazing rowhouses in the animation. I wish we had some of those to renovate and build up city density.

Otherwise, besides the obvious Detroit bullshit they threw in, they got pretty racial in parts. I found it in bad taste.

Dstylin- not sure about the creator coming from this area. The site is hosted by Bay Media Services in Maryland. The site is copyrighted by a turd named John Tayman who is affiliated with a site called ExtremeSkins.com, a redskins forum/blog.

Someone from this area... I doubt it.

It doesn't take from the fact that the cartoon was fould from jump anyway...

If nobody complains, maybe, say, 5,000 would view it. A few good-intentioned, but naive, people complain, thereby giving it the free publicity it needs to propagate. Then, upwards of 5 million might take the time to view it. Brilliant!

Just painful more than anything else. And just downright offensive, especially if you're one of the minorities portrayed in the clip. I'd really expect to see that on some white supremacists website to tell you the truth. On top of that, there wasn't much funny on a comedic level.

Jerome Bettis eating a bucket of KFC has nothing to do with his girth, but has everything to do with racist steoreotypes of African Americans. I wonder how Jerome Bettis would feel if he saw how he is depicted in this cartoon? How would arabs feel about the way they are depicted in this cartoon? This effort at humor was in very bad taste. The creator needs to apologize to Jerome Bettis, the City of Detroit, and all arabs in our area.

I'm sure arabs are used to being depicted this way. When you're a person of color in America you get accustomed to people thinking they know everything about you upon meeting you. This is nothing new.

IMO, Polish and Jewish jokes are frequently told by Poles and Jews, respectively. Especially by numerous Jewish stand-up comedians. These two groups don't seem offended by them. Other ethnic groups are probably more uptight.

True Livernois Yard,

Yet there is a difference between making jokes as an insider vs an outsider.

Otherwise, A black man eating fried chicken, the random black man carjacking, and the Muslim babbling are tired and played out.

The whole cartoon was just...stupid. For lack of a better word.

I brought up the Polish bit in response to another post speaking on behalf on Poles. I feel that most of the Polish jokes would have long been dead and buried if it weren't for Poles retelling them again and again. I speak from long experience in this matter. I never remember even once any Polish pleading for Polish jokes to cease.

Can't speak for any Jews, however. But Jewish comics of both sexes became rich and famous telling Jewish jokes and I still have not heard any criticism, except from those "goody-goody two-shoes types who seem to bend themselves backwards to show us how much they "care," ad nauseum.

Of course the cartoon was stupid. Two observations:

(1) The site that hosts it can make $ out of it in a number of ways. Either by hitting the site(s) or buying T-shirts.

(2) The worst thing to do if one doesn't like it is to give it any more free publicity. Some posters actually watched some others.

That goes for the original poster. I would have never viewed it otherwise. By doing so, I probably generated a very small amount of revenue to that site - Common sense 101...

That site has a ton of coprighted material actually. Notice that background image of the city skyline is one of the most prominent images of the Detroit skyline on google images, but it is copyrighted, and it's posted on a site that generates revenue with advertising and T-shirt sales. If the creator didn't ask permission, it is illegal. Furthermore, as previously mentioned, there are the steelers logos on that site. I know the NFL would definitely not want to have their logos on a site that has the content we saw.

If it was anything else, I'd let it go. People make stupid crap like this all the time, but when it comes to putting other people's content on a cartoon such as this, then there is an even better reason to make this a serious issue.

Question: has anyone seen graffiti on the outside of a DDOT bus? I can't ever remember that. Ever.

As to the rest of it, how many times can we say bigoted and racially offensive, stupid and boring, stereotypical and ignorant? Maybe the fact that we keep repeating these sentiments shows just how bad it really is. I just hope my Detroit neighbors or my Lebanese American friend never have to see this...

Looks like I (we) may have gotten under someones skin. Got this email today and they invited me to post it and share it with you.

email:
You Retards
Ok let me start off by saying this. YOU FUCKING RETARDS! First off, the joke about Jerome eating a bucket of chicken was FAT JOKE, not a racial joke, a FAT JOKE! Notice how fat he is. Second of all, it true that you have the largest murslim population in the US. The street vendor was just a JOKE! Thirdly, Matt Millin is a total retard, seriously the man doesn't know the first thing he's doing. And lastly about your precious city of Detroit, it true that you have some pretty shitty parts of the city, they are not saying that the entire city is total shit, it's just a JOKE! Plus they been to Detroit, so they should know. Now to all of you, learn to take a joke or kill yourselves!

Go show that to all your stupid ass friends in the shitty forum of yours.

Wrote him an email. Got this back. Some of his points didn't even relate to what I said. Talk about defensive...

"Boo Hoo.
First off, the joke you call offensive was a fat joke,, i made a joke
about a fat man with a bucket of chicen, YOU saw a black man with a bucket
of chicken, so don't drop your problems and hang ups on me and then blame me
for them.
Do you want to know why I had Bettis eat chicken in that cartoon? Because
he's fat, and fried chicken is a greasy, fatty, fast finger food that comes
packaged in a bucket. Having him eat cheeseburgers the whole cartoon
wouldn't have been as fun in my opinion.
For the record, in our archives you'll find a cartoon we did way back on
2003 about Monday Night Football in which John Madden walks around with a
bucket of chicken, eventually getting it stuck on his head..
I wonder,, would you have found THAT offensive too? Or is that ok, because
John Madden isn't black? Is he allowed to be seen eating fried chicken
without setting off your racist ignorance? Would you have seen that as a
corny joke about his size, rather than his color? Is color all you see?

Seriously, you couldn't be more off base with your racial comment, and
frankly, i find it offensive that you imagine black people so
sterotypically that if any of them is shown enjoying fried chicken, your
small mind immediately conjures thoughts of racism.

Secondly, I couldn't care less about my portrayal of Detroit. I'm not in the
business of making nice. I am in the business of making smartass cartoons.
In regards to black people with guns,, hey you're right,, that never
happens, especially in Detroit, right? Good grief,, now we can't look at the
actual world around us without being called names? Why is it if I depict a
single carjacker as black, your racism again crops up and assumes i am
making a statement about the entire race? Why do you have to notice nothing
but color? Why cant he just be a carjacker? I suppose if i had made the
carjacker Asian, you'd be ok with it? Ridiculous

Again, keep your racism and hang ups to yourself. It's ridiculous that in
this day and age that a cornball fat joke can't be made without some dumbass
like you getting all up in arms over stereotypes that are DECADES out of
date.
However, thanks for watching. I do appreciate it. And I appreciate knowing
our contact form is restricted,, we just launched the new version of the
site, and kinks like that still have to be worked out. I wasn't aware of
that one.
Please, if nothing else, understand, that just knowing there's people like
you out there who get their buttons so easily pushed is plenty incentive for
me to keep doing it. I doubt that was the intent of your letter, but it's
pretty much the result.

Regards,
John Tayman"

My reply...

"So, you don't think your portrayal of the arab american reflects any kind of negative stereotype? You're saying blacks eating chicken isn't a racial stereotype? In fact you're saying just the opposite? I hadn't realized you were trying to be so high-minded and idealistic. Oh wait, you said it was a joke. Which is it?"

Any reply from him will probably just go in the deleted bin without reading. This thread should probably die too. Not worth arguing about someone this silly.

It appears that Mr. Tayman is so upset about our reaction to his caricature of Detroit and blatant racism; he has recorded an explanation of his deeds. I will not post the link to this dribble, but sufficed to say, it a repeat of what he wrote to Llyn.
He fails to understand that if he wanted to make it a “fat” joke, as he claims, the black character would have been eating something different in each scene. But in his distorted world of reality, it most likely would have been a watermelon.
He makes no reference to his Arab depictions or religious mockery.
I will give $10.00 to anyone who can show that DDOT buses have any graffiti on them at all. Other cities can only dream of the clean buses Detroit has.
Hopefully come Monday morning, the NFL attorneys will slap him around a little.
Mission accomplished! Maybe he will have a few sleepless nights.
This was not satire, it is bigotry.

Detroityes is mentioned (although not by name) and they even link to it. There were several people in the thread who were defending Detroit's image.

It's funny that they think we're so sold on ourselves.

All the commentary from John and Co. seems to focus on the Bettis eating chicken thing, too. If it was just that, I would've probably given them the benefit of the doubt. Even making fun of the city.... used to it. But then there was the arab caricature... and what... there's not a pattern there?

As far as criticism... they have no idea, do they? I think we should send Ras and company over there.

Time to jump on my soapbox! It’s this kind of attitude that keeps these invisible borders in Detroit strong. The distasteful crap was just to "spark" some anger, for sure. It’s shameful and the creator obviously has no talent or artistic ability. Yuck.

First of all I am White. I say that NOT because that makes me special, but because this cartoon also attempts to STEREOTYPE me! Anyone who even thought part of this cartoon was funny, PLEASE! know where I am coming from. The cartoon offends me as well as it should anyone who knows Detroit.

I always attempt to receive everyone I encounter equal. Sadly at times we all have stereotypes in our head. For example I was on the east side of Detroit this Christmas season and I was having a little bit of a high stress day. This black gentleman was approaching my bus stop and in my head I thought.. “Great hes going to beg me for money”. He tipped his hat to me and said “Have a Blessed Christmas Sir”.. and I wished him the same and he carried on. How TERRIBLE I felt at that moment…he was just a nice guy. Why should I or anyone judge others… it’s not our job.

I love Detroit. Simply put and
"This cartoon pisses me off. It just enforces terrible stereotypes!!"

I having been born in Detroit and then moved to a suburb, yet continuing to spend much time in Detroit, and work in Detroit amongst many different people HATE the stereotype that since I am white and in Detroit,

"I MUST be a clueless privileged rich white suburbanite and out of place."

In fact I am less offended if an African American says something that may be perceived "racial" to me, because likely they have encountered one of this stupid white suburbanites who are afraid to leave the comfort of their leather-seat SUV and Northville home. You see them speeding down to the casinos, looking around for dear life, clutching onto their purses and zooming out of the city as fast as they can after a sporting event.

Some of these white suburbanite "sports-fans" really anger me to the extreme. I was waiting for my DDOT bus a few weeks ago on Michigan Ave when there was a game going on downtown, while some smart ass suburbanites were parking in my bus stop area are laughing about it. Because of this I MISSED my bus as they could not see me and had to resort to standing in a puddle of nasty slush since I was hidden behind all these jam packed SUVs. I called DPD and the nice Eddie Bauer edition SUV was TOWED.

Also, VERY offended at the bus in this cartoon. I admit some DDOT coaches are in need of repair. However I have NEVER seen graffiti like that pictured. And the driver picture was likely suggestively unkind as well. Some of the bus drivers out there are the best people you will meet. One of my regular drivers always looks out for this one blind man, also keeps an eye on kids debarking in his mirrors and kneels to the curbs for seniors…I don’t need to continue and defend against the evil of this cartoon.

Lastly, APPOLOGIES to the suburban sports fans who I stereotyoed. Im shure many of you do not make fun of the D, who come down and maybe have a drink at a local bar, give a fellow man in need a few bucks , or support a church or soup kitchen or just don’t spread the hate. There’s a lot of good people out there, but SCREW these STEREOTYPES.

Um, we're not talking genocide or slavery here where silence can be construed as tacit approval, we're talking about an insignificant cartoon on an insignificant website. Ignoring it would have been the best option. When you acknowledge it, you only encourage more of the same, like when you acknowledge the misbehavior of an attention-seeking child.

If your intention with this whole mess was to put more money in the creator's pocket and encourage him to make more cartoons about Detroit, well, you appear to have succeeded. The creator of the cartoon made comments on the bangcartoon forum to the effect the uproar that has resulted over this cartoon is just incentive for him to continue. His fans are egging him on to make more Detroit cartoons that are "10 times worse" specifically because of the backlash. The thing you have to understand about internet self-promoters is that any publicity is good publicity as long as it gets people to visit your site.

Of course any and all are free to express to the author how they feel about his work, or vent about it here, but getting Channel 4 news involved wasn't a smart move, it played right into the hands of the cartoon's creator.

I didn't promote his website. I wrote him an email. And I encourage everyone not to waste their time on watching the cartoon. And this guy is just waaaaaay too angry at the world.

Besides, ad revenue from people coming from our site is just insignificant in terms of numbers. Probably could get a cup of cheap coffee, but certainly not a latte. Although this guy doesn't need any more caffeine.

By the way, I would kindly disagree warriorfan. Just because it's not genocide or slavery doesn't make it - ignorable - in my mind. Nor does calling it a joke. I know you wouldn't take it to this extreme, but what if it was a "nigger joke"? I didn't like the cartoon and I have no problems saying so.

I'm sure this guy had no realization of just how offensive it could be or he wouldn't have written it. At least I'd like to think that. I have no ill will towards him. But clearly he is also not a humble person. He'd rather defend his turf than consider the possibility that he might be wrong. I was hoping for the opposite reaction, but clearly that's not going to happen.

Let him tell himself how "righteous" he is. He's like a cartoon fundamentalist. You're not going to change his mind anyhow.

I think there are times when calling someone out is the appropriate course of action. Take the Jimmy Kimmel controversy. There was a public uproar here in Detroit, and that forced Kimmel to apologize publicly. Not only that, but it was a driving factor in his decision to come here for a week to showcase the city and "mend fences." That was one example where speaking out was the smart thing for the city.

This is not the case for this cartoon. The author is not a public figure. He will not apologize or remove the cartoon no matter how offensive it is or how much hate mail he gets. Such action will only serve to encourage him. You are right that the hits provided by this forum are insignificant, but the hits generated from the free advertising on Channel 4 (which millions of homes have access to) might be significant. I'm sure many people saw that broadcast and probably went to their computer to see for themselves what all the fuss was about, and as a result exposed themselves to material they might find offensive. If the author thinks similar cartoons about Detroit will be as "successful" he will make more of them.

There are times when the best course of action is simply not to "feed the beast." Ask any parent of a two-year old, they will tell you that sometimes the best way to deal with a temper tantrum is to just ignore it, let the child learn that the behavior will not get him/her the attention they are seeking and when they figure out that it isn't working, they will stop.
