Royal Oak, Mich. – First Annual Detroit Film Festival coming to Royal Oak March 18th and 19th. With the goal of reshaping the film industry in Detroit, two local filmmakers are organizing a film festival where up and coming independent filmmakers can enter for the chance to have their work featured for a general audience. Until this festival there has not been an event where a variety of independent filmmakers can have their work screened. Metro Shorts will be part of a first an annual film festival here in Detroit. It will feature short films with the goal of repeating next year but with feature films as well. Founder Patrick Keeley decided to start the annual event with short films only this year in order to get more films screened and to gauge how well a festival of this type would be received here in Detroit. So far, the response has been overwhelming. The festival expects to receive over 500 films for the competition and an attendance of up to 5000 people for the two days. |

"Why isn't it held in Detroit?" How many theaters will rent you space IN Detroit? And how many of them are really supportive of small indie films? |

We plan to be in Detroit next year with Feature Films. The reason the Shorts are being held in Royal Oak is because we tried to get some theatre's on board in Detroit, but the festival didn't have enough money to do it in Detroit this year. We're hoping to gain enough recognition and obtain secure sponsors this year in order to afford Detroit next year. So far, we only have "in kind" sponsors which are great, but we do need some monetary sponsors. Any ideas? visit MetroShorts.com to get details of the festival. |

In Detroit, for the Detroit Docs film festival, they showed films at the Detroit Film Theatre in the DIA, an auditorium or something at CCS, and the space that the Detroit Film Center has on Washington downtown. I'm glad this festival is going on at all (I love the ones that go on in Ann Arbor) but I wish the city of Detroit could share in this. |

We will be showing all types of films not narrowing it down to just documentaries. It will probably be held around the same time, March of next year, and will be a five day event. We hope to attract filmmakers from around the world and get the attention of Hollywood. This year, Tom Spiroff who produced Jeff Daniel's films will be premiering his two shorts bringing in many of his friends from Hollywood for the event. Once we have confirmation of who, we'll post the names on the site, MetroShorts.com. |
