Hey everybody. Does anyone know what this building is? I first saw it from the roof of the studio I work at in HP. I got over to it yesterday. It's a block east of Hamilton.

The yellow pages sign on it wasn't a big enough clue? It's an old Michigan Bell, AT&T, SBC, now AT&T building.

That's what I figured, but I wanted to be sure. It looks like there's some kind of renovation or cleanup going on there. There's a USEPA sign out front detailing a brownfield cleanup. There's also Habitat for Humanity signs on the building and the fence surrounding it.

Search the forum for "yellow pages" or telephone and HP and you will find a ton of info on older threads about this building. forumer Mikem is the resident telephone building maven on this forum so if you "find-in-this-page" <ctrl-f> in mozilla firefox within these threads for posts by him you will likely find info quickly

(welcome to the forum btw)

The search tool is on the left waaay down

I have asked the exact same question before.

Here are a few archived threads on the building:

https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/18968/20711.html

https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/50492/50927.html

Hope the above 2 links will help you learn a great deal about that structure.

I think the main order of business there was printing phone books and maintaining the address directory service. They also had engineering offices there, but I don't know much more about it.

It's a beautiful building. The Sanders building next to is is nice too. That's a very strange part of town over there. Especially the stretch of Madison between Manchester and seven mile. You go up Madison toward McNichols and the west side of the street looks like an H bomb went off over there. The east side of the street is full of nice little neighborhoods with well kept houses and manicured lawns.

The old HQ is long gone. I believe it was knocked down and redeveloped.

But, is it really in Highland Park or Detroit? I know it's right on the border, but I can't remember what side it's on.

It's certainly a landmark.

*just went to the Detroit assessor's website and found that it lies in Detroit somewhere along the 800 block of Oakman Blvd. but I can't seem to find out which address it is. None of the owners say SBC. Off subject, but it looks like Focus:HOPE owns quite a bit of Oakmen frontange for quite a few blocks*

Sarcasm for some, moronic for others. Not everybody sits on their plump ass and read every single thread on DetroitYes. The majority of people have a job to do and only chooses specific topics to explore. I guess you have not evolved enough to be able to sustain employment - and get a J-O-B.

Well I’m done toying with you thanks for being a dumbass and making my afternoon interesting but it is time to go home. Maybe we can play again tomorrow highschool.

Wow, not only are you a dumbass, your argument doesn't even make logical sense whatsoever now.

Being on DetroitYes = Having a job ?

Merchantgander, you are worse than pathetic, and you seriously need to pass your 3rd grade MEAP test(http://mason.k12.mi.us/pages/c urriculum/meap.html) before spending more time on this forum.

It looks like an old sears & roebuck store, similar massing and deco details. AT&T probably bought the plans right out of the sears catalog.
