Using wunderground's temperature maps for the next five days leads me to believe that the next Alberta Clipper will not get past Lakes Superior or Huron. It's possible for some of this predicted snow to become rain instead. The ground will be somewhat "warm" too. wunderground |

The city might just get an inch or so, plus rain. You got to go north quite some DX to possibly get appreciable snow. I worked a dozen years in broadcasting eons ago. Then and now, weather forecasts are/were always hyped for the worst possible scenario, even to the point of sometimes even faking it. How many times are they going to yell "Wolf!" and still get suckers to keep falling for it? Other times when no bad WX is expected, well, that is when we do get slammed. Usually once/twice a year it happens like that. A real meteorologist once told me that even with all the expensive tools and toys at their disposal, nothing beats looking up at the sky at regular intervals. |

It's days like this I almost miss Sonny Eliot and his more than low tech methods of reporting the weather. Anyone remember him actually using chalk on a printed map of Michigan? That's almost a performance piece compared to today's high tech see every raindrop sort of technology. |

Sonny Eliot still reports the weather on the Radio. WWJ at 4:16 and 5:16. I much prefer their regular weathermen to Sonny's schtick. |

That's exactly what it is- a schtick. If I want real weather, Sonny Eliot's about the LAST guy I want reporting it on the radio. I somehow lose the information amidst the Swedish translation or the low temperature in Oscoda. |

Weather.com does have a watch for Washtenaw, Oakland and Macomb counties. The watch doesn't cover Wayne county yet. Typing in a Detroit Zip won't bring it up. An Oakland county zip will. 4-7 inches expected. |

Great maps Mikem, you have to go to the source. There are so very advanced sites out there for getting observations, and you really have to stick with the NWS for forecasts. Looks like the real snow of 5-8" is gonna be well north of M-59. Detroit will probably get about 2" with about 3" in A2 and Pontiac. |

I'd just like to mention, because it pisses me off, that WDIV's "4 Live Radar" is nothing more than a feed from the Detroit/White Lake, Grand Rapids, Gaylord, and Fort Wayne NWS radars. Although channel 4 likes to make it seem as though they are responsible for the content, they are doing nothing but paying for a live data feed from the government. I'm sure a good number of you already knew that. |

For all the bragging channel 4 does about their maps.... theyre not even in motion. And the stupid sweeper graphics they superimpose over the radar sites insult my inteligence. smoke & mirrors over a freaking still image. I can do better in 2 seconds on the internet. Clark1, I'm pretty sure WDIV and WXYZ have their own Doppler radars. I think WDIV's is on their broadcast antenna, and WXYZ's is somewhere in Northville or Plymouth. |

Bingo MikeM, that round object on the penthouse is the dome (looks to be about 5' in diameter). I think they have to keep it away from the tower because of shadows and reflections. I assume they microwave the signal to the tower (across the street), then hop it downtown. |

WDIV does have their own radar, yes, but not 4, and those sweeping lines point to the locations of the NWS sites. WJBK-2 also takes a NWS feed. To their credit, WDIV does use their own radar on occasion, for truly local weather, and mostly for severe weather. WXYZ-7's doppler radar is at Mettatal Airport in either Plymouth or Canton (I'm not sure which it is). At least it was last time I checked. |

the sweeping lines on channel 4 are just fakes. On a real radar, the sweeping line indicates the area that is being updated on the live radar screen as the antenna sweeps around a full 360 degrees. Channel 4's are just cheesy laser-beam graphics that are thrown on, and that dont actually make the map 'move'. At least on weather.com I can load a time-lapse of the last few radar images in order to get a feel for where weather is brewing from & how fast it's developing. Channel 4's just trying to woo the average person into thinking they have some massive weather control station deep below the Fort Shelby or something Pardon the rant, this is a pet peeve of mine that my girlfriend and I were just talking about the other nite. So you're saying the sweeps are graphics imposed on a radar mosaic? I think Clark is right, that when WDIV shows a longer range map, the sweeps are the actual returns from the NWS Nexrads. I think there are several vendors who sell these weather processing packages to local TV stations, including the ability to create their own composites from NWS feeds. |

That is correct MikeM. The stations buy the infromation from vendors. I cant think of the name off hand, but there are 2 or 3 companys that compile the NWS data and sell it to them. One site that I found to be no nonsense is www.wx.com It seems to lock up on occasion, but I like the lack of BS. Wx is TV shorthand for weather |

The sweeps on the local radar are real... But they like to put up a regional radar still that has multiple sweep graphics on it, and if you watch them closely, you'll note that they infact dont update the map. I'll stick to the net, thanks |
