As I sit here and suffer from insomnia, i'm wondering if anyone on the forum here knows of anything to do in this fantastic City of Detroit late at night and after hours and what not. Not sure if there are any hot spots for photos late at night, any other people that are night owls as well, etc. Any advice? :-)

Go to either one of the coney islands and people watch. An amazing array of people stroll in- from the tuxedos to the street people, the cops and the robbers, and pretty much anyone & everyone.

The coney is definitely one place i've been to late at night... it is fun, but for a person of my stature, it gets a lil unnerving at times. (I'm like 5'9" and a whole whopping 130lbs, ppl tend to fuck with me sometimes 'cause i look like i'm 16) although, I need to find a night owl to go building "spelunking" with... I've seen so many phenomenal pics from atop some of the vacant bldg's in the CBD, i'm just wayyyyyyy too much of a pussy to go alone, let alone know what the hell to do sometimes, lol... Definitely interested in connecting with some other Detroit enthusiasts and what not...

Welcome! Ok...in terms of businesses that are open after 2:00 a.m.every night you got Plaka's, Lafayette/American and the casinos (Plus Soon a friend of the forum is opening a coffee house that will be open 24-7 (or at least that's what he said)
On weekends, many more restaurants are open to 4 and 5 a.m. including Cyprus Taverna. Oslo's club part is open until 4 a.m. Other than that you basically got to get out there and get in with a bar owner who won't kick you out at last call or a buddy who has a loft that always ends up being the after party.
In terms of the spelunking...you'll find folk...unless they find you first muahhhahahahaha:-)

Many of Detroit's Motorcycle gangs/social groups offer a agglomeration of activities from poker tournaments, disco's, to strip dancing.

The 'Outcast' on Grandriver use to be one of ma'fav' afterhours joint.

If your into 'house music/techno',there is a place on Woodward/6mile across from Palmer Park that offers afterhours 'house music'__ I believe on Monday, Wednesday, and Sundays. It's been a while since I was there.

Also Belle Isle is a great place to go afterhours.

Cruise Woodward, 8mile, Hamilton, Michigan Ave., for hookers.(LOL)

If all is lost__ the Casino's are always a good source for afterhours entertainment.

Personally, I have always wanted an afterhours art studio/w music and entertainment. In the old days(early 80's) the'eastern market area' would offer stuff like that.

Lot's of bad stuff happening in lots of places lately.

You cited Greektown. Back up the odds on that with real numbers, not one incident.

I guess I would rather gamble with my life in the city than be an old cynical prick in the suburbs.

After hours? Go to Ann Arbor. (Just kidding.)

Paulmcall, don't forget, Detroit is safer than driving.

It's hard to say Mcpd, because this city and this entire area, minus Ann Arbor, really like to go to bed early. My only idea would be to hang around bars and casinos downtown until they close, but that gets old and expensive. Ya can't even go to Belle Isle late at night anymore!

Funny as you have told the stories of all the times that you were robbed and your house was broken into. Someone appears to be confusing his stories.

^^^
“I haven’t talked to any prostitutes,” Lauren said while taking a break from a training session Tuesday afternoon at Alternatives For Girls, a program in the city that works to help teenage girls. “We call them sex workers.

I guess "physical therapist" was taken already and ho isn't PC.

When I read something like that right off the bat, the entire article looses all creditability.

Go to the nearest Meijer's store and see how they stock the shelves. Be amazed at how much food & STUFF they actually move in one of those places.

thanks for all the suggestions... don't know where to start in responses, but Smogboy, i used to work in a Meijer store back in high school, lol... I know how much crap they can push through a store, lol.

I think i'm just gonna hit a coney one of these nights... See what kind of trouble i can cause, or try not to cause :-)

Also, I suppose I should introduce myself, after all, I am new to the forum. I'm Eddie, 23y/o, and a resident over on the west side of the city. (W Grand Blvd and McGraw) I moved to Detroit back in July from Armada of all places (where I was raised). I've always had a great fascination and love for the City of Detroit and am now a proud resident. I'm very thrilled to see all of the change and improvements to the city. If anyone wants to know anymore info, please feel free to ask :-) i'm pretty much an open book :-)

Hey! that's ma' hood! The neighborhood is a challenge right now__ I grew up on the Blvd, moved many, many, many, times__ now I'm back keeping tabs on my Parents.

I can remember the incredible apartment buildings and beautiful homes up and down the Blvd. Just to name a few things that was on my block back in the day.....

Dentist office, Barbershop, Icecream Palor, Matress store, hardware store, Library, grocery store, Laundry, Cleaners, and a Museum.

Welcome to the D and good luck to you. This is a good forum, most of the people on here have a deep concern about the state of this city.

Okay, so I take it the Meijer's idea is now shot...

if you've got ice skates (and some bravery), go down to Hart Plaza and jump onto the ice rink (I'll assume it's still there) and buzz around for a few laps. Just make sure you have your street shoes nearby or stashed safely. I did this many many years ago and had some homeless dude giving me the once over as I skated. I think the only reason he left me alone was that he was afraid to come out to the ice and try messing with me.

But it's a heckuva view of the RenCen from down in the plaza/ stage area especially if it's a clear night & the moon is out.

Yeah, the Meijer idea is shot... and the ice skating rink is now located in Campus Martius Park (and is also actually larger than the ice skating rink in Rockefeller Plaza in NYC)

I'm a horrible skater, but tonight I did go downtown a lil bit, caught a few crews fixing the lights that have been mounted on the light poles that aim at the buildings downtown.... Wow, I never realized how ugly the Bank One building truly is... lol

Well, which is it? You have claimed how you stuck it out as long as you could which was a number fo years but you are claiming on another post that you "I got to grow up and raise a family without being robbed and having my house broken into!!!"

Seems like you are contradicting yourself quite a bit. At least you are consistent on being an asshole and chiming in with ignorant comments. I'll give you credit for your consistency there.

I got "my" family as an adult at 27 after we moved from Detroit where I grew up.
I saw most of our neighbors leave before we left in 1978.
Now even the neighbors across the street that came in 1978 are leaving now.
Most of you guys on here seem to live in downtown not the neighborhoods. There's a big difference.

Hey Restore the Roar,
They don't hang out too much anymore because it got too crowded;) They're not too big on advertising but somehow bunches of people found them anyway...
Lots of people don't like too many people in a place.
IMO...the less people the better.

Beans & Bytes Cafe, the new coffee shop and cybercafe is open til 5 am on weekends on Woodward in Midtown across from the 24-hour (drive thru) McDonald's. You can also try hanging out at clubs until you get the lowdown on some afterhours clubs.

Before that it was the Midnight Sun ... shit, good times. Order me a "special."

It was all rambunctious Sterling Heights white straight guys the last time I was there a few years ago. The final stop on it's transition from great afterhours black gay bar.

dial4h,the last time i was in there was about 5 years ago... during the slow transition?... (I hadn't heard special there, but i had heard that elsewhere, universal codespeak perhaps)

mcpd, the bottom line is that you might have to go out and find your own afterhours entertainment as most would have reservations about posting it on a forum. (I'm not saying driving around aimlessly, but keep asking around like you did on this thread )

I used to go to The Works for a while... got tired of all the cracked out guys runnin' around.... literally same crowd every weekend night... that and the "Specials" were getting to be WAYYY too watered down for the price of the drink. Haven't been to Numbers in years... lol and I can definitely understand people not wanting to post their activities on the forum, lol... I would post my email address, but i'm not sure if that would be a violation of the rules, or not...

Hamtramike, I was there the most back in 95-96, starting 98-99 a white circuit-boy type element started to take over (complete with moving the dancefloor from the front of the club to the middle to make it bigger). I think the last time I was there was '01 or so, and my (male) friend and I actually felt somewhat unsafe dancing together.
