I'm not 35 so I don't remember this but sounds cool if it happens. I would love for them to rent canoes during the summer and bring back ice skating during the winter. Growing up my favorite place to skate was BI because there was so much room to skate.

Canoe rentals would be awesome out on the Isle.
There needs to be more to do outdoors here!

I subscribe to Backpacker Magazine, their idea of an "escape" weekend in Detroit was to drive out to Milford, rent canoes there, and then drive them back to launch at Belle Isle.......

Thanks for the info on the horses Merchant, it could be a step in the right direction!

Interesting that it mentioned the rec department doesnt seem interested. I think this would be a money making machine (the combination of the horses, canoes, ice skating).

All summer long the island is jam packed, and when I went there just last week after dark in the cold, there were still dozens of cars driving around the island. The park seems to be getting more usage in the last couple of years.

But horse carriages, canoes, combined with the golf course/driving range in the summer could bring lots of people, and dollars to the island.

Perhaps with the tax money the city made on these businesses, they wouldnt need to consider charging to get on the island, since many seem to oppose it.

Personally, I saw charge non-residents 1 or 2 bucks. That would certainly add up over the course of a year. Or suburbanites could buy a season pass for $10 or $15

Just like the Ice Skating in Campus Martius, this could draw a huge crowd...I'm suprised they aren't biting at the opportunity.

They should have a "Sound off" area where everybody with a "bling-bling" ride and loud stereo can sound off against other people with loud stereos in their ride. They need more family oriented stuff like that. :-)

SS, I love that idea. Find a remote corner of the island, put in a parking lot, and designate the thing the official car audio pissing contest location.

Me and my dad were there a few weeks ago and it was nice, except for the homeless people and the one way roads. We were going to look at the casino building, but there were too many homeless people.

I'd like to see an improved Belle Isle. I think it was designed by the Central Park guy.
