There are new signs on the United Artists Building and Milner Hotel.

The UA sign announces a "premier development opportunity" on five acres of historic Grand Circus Park frontage, while the Milner signage is a spiffy new hotel sign on the part of the building formerly covered by the Madison Lennox.

Could this be paraphrased: We are tearing the schitt down?

If someone could get a photo of the new Milner and post it that would be great.

If any of you find yourselves in the area of those signs, be on the lookout for lightning bolts.

I cleaned it up a bit in PS, the lettering wasn't clear.

They are doing two things. First, they are covering up an obvioulsy abandoned building for the Superbowl. And, secondly, it's a great advertising piece for those looking to redevelop or tear down and develop anew. They seem to be testing the waters. No prominent developer/redeveloper can now say "well, I didn't know they were selling."

The Illitch's don't own the whole Tuller/UA block. A small parking lot directly in front of that sign is not owned by them. Neither is the back corner on Adams/Clifford away from GCP. Those two parcels of the block are owned by a certain Harold Shapiro of Bloomfield Hills. And as someone who posted a 1930's map of downtown showed, those 2 parcels have been vacant since at least the 1930's.

Here's the parking lot scene in the 30s for the west GCP.

Funny, one of the workers who put up the UA sign came by a job site I was working on today to visit someone he knew. As he was leaving, a few of us commented about the sign and he said that he had been contracted to install 200 pipe signs and then to take them down after 1 month. I guess these signs are just temporary window dressing, unlike the Statler awnings.

Temporary signs? I don't like the sound of that this looks like Super Bowl stunt to me. It'll be intresting to see how this plays out

The bitch about them being temporary is that Ilitch will get praised for trying to do somethingby the local media. Once the signs come down and the properties continue to rot or get turned into falt lots he will not receive the bad press that should come with it.
