I'm sure the guests will all love driving to CAY (City) Airport down beautiful Conner or Gratiot Blvds.

Could they have picked a crappier part of town to host this? Who the hell thought this one up?!?

The Detroit Historical Society has had parties there and it's reportly a great place for them. Besides, who's driving to this anyway? Fly in, fly out.

Or they might be so confused that they think that this is "the" new neighborhood to live in, kind of like the Lower East Side in Manhattan a while back. Then imagine what happens ...

"Three sources with knowledge of the party, including one with the city," spoke ..."on condition of anonymity." What pompous hoo-ha.

What is this, Watergate? A story about people dying underground? An expose of some corporate malfeasance?

Who cares about this stuff?

Well according to the Freep it is indeed BREAKING NEWS.

quote:

The Detroit party will likely feature athletes, VIPs, playmates and cyber girls.

Cyber girls huh? Are those just visions of the real playmates who don't feel like hanging out Mack Nickles and Conner, or just girls who prefer cyber to the real thing?

Either way the hookers will be cheaper outside the airport than inside it.

I guess I am the only one who thinks this is inspired. I've heard the space is great, and I think there is nothing more apropos for the Detroit SB than to have your uber-high-end party in the middle of what really is the city.

I mean, why not give people a real dose of the city? People LOVE it when they feel they are getting a dose of the "real" thing, and having an experience none of their friends will have. Not to mention skirting danger a little bit. Think of it as "maintaining the authenticity."

Plus, wasn't the rumor that Playboy was having its party in the Clem?

Seriously, I think this is brilliant. What a great way to distinguish your party and give guests an experience they will not soon forget.

I don't know DH4H.... there's a difference between an urban gritty feel and outright squalor.

I tend to think that folks should remember Detroit as being better than they thought it was, rather than being every bit as bad as its' reputation.

I pray for heavy tinting on the Limousine windows.... :-)

Trust me, any party planner worth his or her salt is going for something different and memorable. You simply run out of new and interesting venues and concepts when you are competing with 700 other parties in NY or LA.

Some of you guys might not be too happy with the location from a PR point of view for Detroit, but this is going to be a really cool party for the attendees, I feel.

I'd bet they shopped only for perimeter protection...and the two airports were the only truly secured space outside the stadia area.

Plus, they can fly helicopters in and out all day, and it is already restricted airspace.

Nobody asked if it was in the middle of squalor...they probably expected that.

I absolutely agree Dialh.City airport is a historical place being one of the 1st commercial airports in the country.I would not have thought of it as a venue but that shows my own lack of creativity.

There is nothing in Detroit that people attending the superbowl and playboy party have not seen so trying to shield people from what some might find unattractive seems silly imo.

DH4H, I understand what you are saying.... I'm sure that City Airport (OK it's CAY Airport) will be a great experience.

If they had wanted a truly memorable (and yet chic) experience, then the MCS with the grand lobby cleared of rubble for the soiree, and the facade and tower lit with spotlights (a terrifying otherworldly experience) would do the trick.

Or better yet a party on the 3rd level of the parking structure of the former Michigan Theatre with the ornate plasterwork (9 stories up) all lit up, would be tres chic.

If you are serious - and need a reason, I am serious, and have a reason :-) I am coming to Detroit for the Super Bowl (yes, an out of towner), and would LOVE to get in on those tickets. dndphishin@mchsi.com - if you are serious.

The locations of such shindigs are very often in "unusual" places. That is often done to make that gathering "unique" and "memorable". These people can take any space and make a party out of it (especially with Maxim/Playboy budgets).

As for why these happenings are all "news":

TICKET BROKERS and ADVERTISING.

First, lets take the ticket brokers:

The brokers are the usual distribution arm for tickets to many of the hottest parties. These tickets (like Maxim, Playboy, SI, ESPN, etc) sell through brokers for about $2000. They are a bit of an "official yet unofficial" way to distribute the tix to those willing to pay what the market will bear. Sure, it is possible to get them "comped", but you better know someone or be connected to the company in some meaningful way, or you will pay just like many others who attend.

It's also a bit humorous that the press goes to the ticket brokers for information on ticket pricing for the game. Another form of free advertising - for the broker - and while they are selling you $2500 game tix, you can buy the parties too!

Then, of course, it's advertising for those who hold the parties. The "buzz" created by these gatherings end up in the paper as well as TV news and entertainment programs. The Super Bowl is a mammoth media event - and the parties are one way of getting publicity for these mags/companies in a "sprinkled" form.....with every press mention of the goings on in Detroit, these companies get publicity.

If this kind of infotainment stuff bothers you, get used to it: The rate and fervor of such stories will continue until the game is played. Because when it is the Super Bowl, the only thing bigger than the game and the hype is the scale of the parties. It all goes hand in hand. There will be no excuse for locals not to participate in the revelry, as there is something available for anyone.

There are several celebrity parties being held, too (Magic Johnson and several others, at Posh in Ferndale - as well as other places). Those tix are available on Ticketmaster, if you wanna get in on the fun. These tix run from $75-250 per party - most with open bar. This year, it seems that the celebrity party tickets are being sold through Ticketmaster and other official channels - due to the many "fake" parties in Jax last year - where several parties were "sold in advance" but no party was happening when the patrons got there. In short, a scam. So granted, the tix for many of these parties are expensive - but at least we know these are "for real".

Playboy had actually been in negotiations with my employer, Emerald Theatre in Mt. Clemens, before we decided to go with Sports Illustrated.
We had heard that Playboy was also looking at some of the houses in Birmingham, but apparently that didn't work out. I know Royal Oak Music Theatre was looked at by them as well.
It is EXTREMELY difficult for these groups to get a space secured due to the hold the NFL puts on a chunk of venues to give to it's core sponsors. Couple that with the general lack of existing venues in Detroit to begin with and you can see why they ended up at CAY International. I have no idea what the city got as far as a use fee, but the number we were working with at the time was $450,000.

I've got a great reason I should go. I'm 25 and single and living in, and very proud of, the Motor City. The out-of-towners who are coming in are already all having a great time, since most of them who are coming in already have tickets to events like this (if not to this particular one), and many of them are going to the game. I've got no game tix, no party tix, but I'm surrounded by the festivities and want to get in to some of these events. Only once locals and native Detroiters get in the doors can we start talking about how this city really is a great place to live, work, grow up, etc. That's the kind of thing this city needs to really get people talking--word of mouth that's genuine and coming from people who live here day in, day out.

What better reason than that?

"What better reason than that?"

It's admittedly better than mine. I've already got game tix - so all the better to allow room for others.

But what I REALLY do want is tix to the Bud Bowl Club 1620 tickets for Tiger Stadium (3 Doors Down). I've been listening to WRIF Detroit radio online to try to win tix.....this gig sounds very cool.....

"If this kind of infotainment stuff bothers you, get used to it: The rate and fervor of such stories will continue until the game is played."

No, I don't have to get used to it, I can laugh when a media outlet goes bonkers and acts as if news of a damn party is life-altering, BREAKING NEWS. It belongs in the paper, but not breathlessly hyped as BREAKING NEWS.

This may be hard to believe, but a majority of metro Detroiters won't take part in any Super Bowl activity whatsoever, and will be perfectly happy about it.

Irish has inspired me ...

Club key access, bouffant hair
and bunny-tailed derrier
And satin corsets everywhere
The Bunny Dip sashay

But now to see a real one
One needs an invite to THE mansion
So many things I would have done
If I lived in LA

I've seen bunnies from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
Air-brushed illusions I recall
I really don't know them at all

...

The Playboy Club was a coveted gig for musicians in the '60s -- some of the best jazz acts in town played there.

Dabirch, from the 1974 Pilot, I found a photo of Brother George, just in case anybody wants to know who you were talking about. Now lets hear your imitation of him, everybody had one.

Brother George

East_Detroit: Sorry I didn't get back sooner, forgot about this thread. Sonny wasn't around the Weather Station much, but when he did show, he would break into a Don Rickles like act, and insult most of the patrons. I used to meet my friends there, as it was central to everyone, plus we'd also annoy Bill Long, who was always playing guitar there.
