Hats off. Those are the only three Metro Detroit companies to make the 2006 Best Companies to work for list. Anyone work there? What do they do that's so different? Wonder what the worst companies in Detroit to work for would be. http://money.cnn.com/magazines /fortune/bestcompanies/full_li st/ |

I heard Valassis spends a fortune to win this award, not necessarily to improve life for employees, but to do things to earn points for the award - I work with 2 former employees of the Company. |

I believe it. It's the general consensus that this award can be bought. I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned the relatively low number of minorities at Plante & Moran. 5% is not much. What does that say? I've never worked at a company that has so few African Americans. Even with over half of the company is based in Southeast Michigan |

Don't believe what they tell you about "work and life balance". It's all about the hours. It's not unusual to work 2600 hours in a year. A normal 8 hour day equals about 2080 hours in a year. |

Hey Valerie and Old SW, tell your bosses they should relocate to downtown Detroit. We have to compensate for the loss of JWT. Here's a little history on Plante & Moran. In it's early years, P&M operated out of the Michigan Theater building, the Book Tower and the Penobscot. Now the firm has 15 offices in Michigan and Ohio and is opening a new office this summer in downtown Detroit. That info is from the summer 2001 special pub that Crains did called Detroit at 300: Then and Now. |

Islandman, I checked with someone in our technology group and that position has been filled. Keep watching the web site, they said there might be some additional postings in the coming year. Well mind_field, I've got some newer information. Most recently: The Detroit Office was basically a couple of conference rooms. That office has since been closed as the firm is not targeting business in Detroit. We do a little business there but it's not the focus. I have my own opinions on this and do not agree with this strategy. It probably coincides with the lack of minorities at Plante & Moran. Only 5% of the entire firm are minorities. I never knew about the Michigan Theatre. Right now we have 19 office in Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois. We also have a couple of small offices; one in Nashville and another in Shanghai, China. |

Lots of private sector companies have work today. Resturaunts, grocery stores, malls, dry cleaners, etc. are also open. Lots of teachers even have to work, even though the kids have the day off. I doubt it's a racism thing. |

Back when my mom worked at Valassis, most of the so-called "family-friendly" initiatives did not extend to the plant workers. It was sad, back in the late 80's it really was a great place to work but all of that was cut little by little. |

Old_southwest- I figured out who you are. Turns out I know your nephew. He's good friends with my boyfriends family. Small world. Sorry to hear that you don't like it at P&M too much. Rosedaleken - What position did you apply for? I work in a completely different area than Old_southwest does so I might have a different perspective to offer you. |

Susanrosa - I never said this was a racism thing nor was I insinuating that. But I do think this is a diversity issue and I think diversity is a consideration when determining a great place to work. Don't get me wrong, I think P&M is a good place to work. But I think there are some things people should be aware of that aren't mentioned in the Fortune article. Everyone has a different opinion of what makes a company a great place to work. I agree with you Valerie that your perspective is different and Rosedaleken might want to consider what you have to say. I guess the question for Rosedaleken is "Why would you tell them No if invited back for testing?" Are my comments affecting your decision? If so, I would urge you to disregard and make your own decision. |
