Makes perfect sense.

There were two Airports,

Detroit CITY

&

Detroit METRO

Only one still has scheduled passenger flights. If they were both still running sched. service the name would probably not bother you.

In avaiation, names become entrenched, it's very hard to change names, especailly on International Airports. It would cost more than it's worth.

I agree "Detroit/Wayne County Metropolitan Airport" sounds so provincial.

How about "Detroit International Airport". That sounds more cosmopolitan.

Charles A. Lindbergh, who was born in Detroit already has his name on another major airport (is that the St. Louis Airport?). Unfortunately (and I don't know why) his home in Detroit was razed before Greenfield Village could have gotten it. Were they interested?

Rosa Parks will always be remembered for another form of transportation. And Coleman Alexander Young is mainly only appreciated within Detroit. And naming it after Henry Ford may be confusing, since there is already a Ford Field, although it could be named differently.

One of the few things going right in the region is Detroit Metro. I would not change a thing, and in particular I would not name it after any of our blundering, ineffective corrupt Democratic machine politicians.

90% of the people using Detroit Metro are from outside of the region; for many its their only glipse of Detroit and it's a positive glimpse.
Let's just relish this small victory.

Calling it Detroit International might be nice, but I am so fearful that opening up the name issue will yeild some horrible result, such as a name that further glorifies the anti-business Michigan Democratic party, and that acts as a monumental billboard that say "Warning: do not locate your business in Michigan" to be seen be each of the tens of thousands of cororate decision makers who pass through the airport each month.

I think "Detroit Metro" actually sounds kind of classy. I even like the extended name "Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport."

I actually don't like the more creative names such as Phoenix Sky Harbor International. Though, Port Columbus International in Ohio sounds alright.

Don't know if any of you have taken a stroll past the old Northwest terminal on the airport grounds, but it was in the process of being razed when I was there after Thanksgiving. Looks like progress is being made towards the construction of Detroit's second new terminal. Hadn't seen anyone mention this, so I figured i'd bring it up. :-)

Could be worse we have DTW but Fresno Air Terminal is refered to as FAT.

St. Louis has two airports... Lambert (STL) & Spirit of St. Louis (SUS).

I believe City Airport is actually called Coleman A Young Airport. I remember one of the news channels talking about the short runways at airports after the Midway accident in Chicago and they talked about some of the shortest runways at major airports and the runway at Coleman A. Young Airport was one of the shortest at an airport, although I have never heard it refered to as Coleman Young Airport. But I believe this was on ABC news.

Apparently, that's the new name.

Should be as effective as Montreal-Dorval's renaming the airport as Pierre Trudeau International Airport. (Everyone still calls it Dorval)

I work in aviation, and I have yet to hear anyone call it anything other than Detroit City.

News to me.. You learn something new everyday. Didn't know City Airport was renamed. Who is the carrier now a days? I thought Southwest left (or I am wrong?).

Coleman A. Young is not the right name to call DTW. What influence did he have at the airport? I am honestly asking, I wasn't aware of him being part of the airport funding or otherwise. The terminals were build (or renovated) in the late 50's or 60's (correct me on that please) before his term. No true construction on the new terminal began until after he left office. Now Rosa Parks International Airport does have a ring to it..

But I believe the airport needs to reflect a regional theme, for many good reasons..

It's located in Romulas, not Detroit

It serves the whole metro detroit.

It's an International Airport, the name needs to have international appeal.

(I am going to cause a firestorm on the next topic but it's really true) - What did Coleman Young do to improve Detroit AND the Region? In the magnitude to justify naming the airport after him?

Why rename it in the first place? What does it really buy the region to take that step? Is there a business justification to change it? Tourism increase or otherwise? Not seeing the point really... Sorry Detroit_owns.. Good post though..

There are plenty of named structures, where the named had nothing to do with the actual structure. I don't see why this is any different. And, please let's not turn this into an indictment on Coleman A. Young. You would be better starting another thread on that subject so not as to distract from the purpose of this one.

Digitaldom, there are NO scheduled flights from DET. DET is also an international Airport, as is Port Huron (PHN), Willow Run (YIP) & Pontiac (PTK). Any airport that has customs available is considered International.

I don't think the original suggestion on this thread to name DTW after Coleman Young was serious, Digitaldom... especially since city airport is already named after him. Probably more of a comment on all of the things already named after Coleman Young and Rosa Parks. (I'm fine with most of those, but renaming DTW would be a bit much.)

City Airport is a cargo airport, I believe. There aren't any passenger flights, I don't think. AIW knows more about this, though, and should expand on the discussion concerning the current usage.

Oh yes if only we re-named the airport all our problems would be solved. Hurrah for the brilliant mind that came up with this. Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah! We owe you a great debt of gratitude for once the airport is renamed (how about the New Detroit Renaissance Super Cool Rising World-Class Ultra Skyharbor...where all your wildest dreams come true) Detroit and the region can finally climb out of the muck and once-again be a truly world-class city in a world-class region of a world-class state. I guess I don't give two shits if the airport I uses sounds blah so long as they get me through security efficently. They probably won't let me into the International Brotherhood of Nazal-Gazers, Hipsters, and Booboisie.

Actually given the financial health of the airline industry perhaps, if you really wanted to give DTW a Detroit-centric names that's appropriate I suggest Edsel Airport, or Corvair Airport, AMC Airport. Name the international terminal after the LeCar or Yugo.

Sorry if this post sounds bitter but I just can't help but wonder if there aren't more pressing matters to discuss than another meaningless "branding" opportunity.

Jelk, if we only discussed what REALLY matters, we would be only discussing world hunger, communicable diseases, child labor laws in 3rd world countries, etc....

And that would mean no discussion of such frivolity such as building facades and street improvements.... :-(
