HAH! soon all of the ghettohoods of Jefferson Eastlawn area will be gentrified into McMansions so those snobby white-folks are the snobbyville and come back to reclaim what's theirs.

I think this material was all covered in the Detroit memories thread on that east-side neighborhood.

Ron, you pretty much single-handedly shut that thread down with a bitter and unwarranted attack on a poster you attacked as a draft-dodger.

"HAH! soon all of the ghettohoods of Jefferson Eastlawn area will be gentrified into McMansions so those snobby white-folks are the snobbyville and come back to reclaim what's theirs."

Id rather live by snobby white rich people in McMansions than drug dealers that rape, murder, and steal from the people they live by. BTW... any one moving to the eastside, of any income comes back down to earth by necessity anyway. Being down to earth is part of being an eastsider....

Not to mention that if white people did start moving in, most of the eastside will be populated by those from St. Clair Shores, Grosse Pointe, and Roseville... Those out in the Mcburbs are too far gone, so u dont gotta worry about them... they wont ever come back... but their kids will when they cant afford their parents standerd...

so if I were u, id start welcoming them... growing up in today's america is pretty tough unless your family has alot of money, no matter what race you are... That attitude is going to force private security of neighborhoods REAL quick if this ever happened... now how bitter do you think you will be when you cant even be a bum and walk around it anymore without harassment???

Danny... its people like you that are going to perpetuate the ghetto instead of lifting it up.

That area between Connor and Alter is a wasteland.

And the fact that as soon as you get 1/2 block east of Alter you are in Grosse Pointe.

But it looks like a no man's land in a lot of that area. Weird, eery, and sad. Thinking of all the homes and families who once lived there and now its as if it never existed.

Jerome...a CA guy who spends too much time on the Eastside when he's back in town.... The good news is that it makes the rest of the city look a whole lot better.

Actually, that brings up a good question. Why is there such a stark difference between Alter on 1 side and Alter on the other? You'd think that a bit of Grosse Pointe would spill over, but its as if there's a wall thrown up there. One side has restaurants, pubs, stores, and 1/2 block away its deserted and boarded up.

Why is this? Would a good business not be successful if on the "wrong side" of Alter? The only nice business I can think of is Alter Collision, I think on the Detroit side of Alter and Kercheval. Otherwise that side of the street is completely dead.

Actually a portion of Mack near Alter is the same thing. Detroit side fairly dead, GP side doin okay.

Why?

My mom grew up on Chalmers below Jeff. Same house as her father and his father. It became a crack house later...

My understanding is that the neighborhood went to pot during the late 60's during some notorious HUD scams that one particular realtor was pulling.

Bottom line is, it used to be a great area of the city and the dividing line was not so stark.

Some good things like the Mack/Alter development and the sprucing up of "some" of the buildings in Jeff/Chalmers area show it headed in a positive direction....but it is all going at Detroit speed...too slow.

What do have against rich people Ron? I'm hoping that my kids become some of that sort of ilk some day.

As soon as those 67 riots and DEAD (C)KRAK HEADS rolled into the Detroit side of Mack/Chalmers area the whole Detroit ghettohood went completely belly up into a quick urban prarie. The those rich folks over at Snobbyville tried to ignore the Detroit black mess. Even though they can hear the gun shots, arguments from black folks, and smelling weed, just from 10 blocks away while they are living in their nice comfortable $400,000 to $1,500,000 dollar homes. Boy they can hear those gun shots right about now.

Danny you're in rare form today..... LOL at DH4H.....

Well one interesting thing about the Jefferson & Chalmers area is that most of the neighborhood is gone, but most of the retail buildings are still standing.

I hope that the Art Deco style Vanity Ballroom isn't beyond repair. There are many very attractive 2 or 3 story buildings still standing along that stretch of Jefferson. Let's hope that redevelopment of this retail area doesn't happen at the cost of tearing everything down, and building back from the street.

So what is the story regarding the dude who owns those cool buildings, won't put a dime into rehabbing them and then paints that People Press crap on the walls as if someone is going to stop their car, walk over and ponder his musings...perhaps with a bottle of Colt 45 in hand?

Nothing against rich people, that's why Grosse Pointe is so nice compared to detroit. People stayed there and never moved out and kept the place in prime condition. The Detroit side is trying hard to go back to where it was.

Ron_saad,

Those rich white folks over in Snobbyville had did a very pretty job keeping up with their community and making sure that NO mess from Detroit is ever going to step across Alter Rd. Even though they are going to hear some gun shots, they will just ignore it until the bullet hits their pretty glass window and some family may get killed in the process.
