So here I am at work sitting here with my coworker reading a thread about Festivus. Thinking to myself..."what in the hell is Festivus?" To help with the midnight blahs he is watching a Seinfeid dvd. I am now doing a wikipedia definition of the word and ironically sees that it is related to Seinfeld. Hmmmmm...what a cowinkydinky....huh??? These midnights are seriously getting to me...LOL |

Festivus Shmestivus..... that's almost as bad as spelling Christmas "XMAS", especially when they spell "MERRY" ending it with an I and an E. And don't even get me started with KWANZAA... who invented that one?..... Give me the 12 days of Christmas anyday....... As Asshat Jerry Falwell said "lets put CHRIST back into Christmas". (and Happy Hannukah to our Jewish friends!) |

There was some dispute about the proper date of the birth of Christ and not everyone agrees even to this day. It was not until A.D. 350, that December 25 was declared the official date for celebrating Christmas by Pope Julius I. When the fathers of the church decided to settle upon a date to celebrate the event, they wisely chose the day of the winter solstice, since it coincided with some rival religions' celebrations and the rebirth of the sun (see Year of the Sun Calendar), symbolized by bon-fires and yule logs. December 25 was a festival long before the conversion of the Germanic peoples to Christianity, it seemed fitting that the time of their winter festival would also be the time to celebrate the birth of Christ. The darkness that had frightened and threatened to defeat the ancient pagans, was forever defeated by the coming of Christ. for more: http://www.serve.com/shea/germ usa/xmasintr.htm The page further goes on to say: Xmas. The familiar abbreviation for Christmas originated in the Greeks. X is the first letter of the Greek word for Christ, Xristos. By the sixteenth century, "Xmas" was popular throughout Europe. Whereas early Christians had understood that the term merely was Greek for "Christ’s mass," later Christians, unfamiliar with the Greek reference, mistook the X as a sign of disrespect, an attempt by heathen to rid Christmas of its central meaning. For several hundred years, Christians disapproved of the use of the term. Some still do. |

Hello Newman... I'm going to cancel my Festivus party because there are so many others to compete with and I don't have a Festivus Pole. |

Psip, it was not until the 8th Century that Englands Venerable Bede came up with the Anno Domini (BC & AD) system of dating years from the birth of Christ (some say he was off by 4 years). And speaking of which.... when exactly did the "pagan" "B.C.E" and "C.E." replace "BC" and "AD"? I first noticed this on the cable TV history documentaries using these 2 terms in the last few years. Who came up with that? And why wasn't there an announcement? Don't tell me it was the liberal intelligencia at American universities! Even though I consider myself a liberal, I have a problem with a group who are pretentious enought to try and change 1200 years of tradition. Political correctness gone amuck!!! |

I think that the airing of grievances at a detroityes Festivus party would be something to see. Maybe will have grievances with each other, but more likely they'll be a result of the struggle that is living in the Detroit area. |
