The picture in that initial article just says it all. Are those women? Or large black oval blobs with eyes and hands? (and truly nothing else in view)

Let me just add that I have respect for Islam as a religion, and believe in each person's right to practice his or her religion as they so choose. I do find that picture very troubling though. All signs of sex/gender, and individuality, are erased from their presence.

Saudi's, Our Allies???

YES! Thanks to the Bush family and their ties the Saudi/Bin Laden Families. Plus the Saudis invested over 75 billion dollars of their assets to out nation. If they take their money out, then our nation will suffer a recession far greater than our economic recession.

in Israel

I agree that the Suadi's are very extreme and the laws that they impose on their people are horrible at times...but they are not alone in conservatism...

here is two images of the two majopr religions gone conservative:

while the Suadis and some interpetation of laws are not even close..the conservative right can impact women very significantly in all religions...

but then again "choice" is the operative word and the Saudi's don't not give one much choice..many of the students here in the states are living in fear and trying to make it in two very different worlds..many are comfortable...depends on whose voice you hear..I had a conservative presenter come and explain their version of Islam...and the sad thing he was twenty steps from the Suad's and while he was proud of his heritage...he feared the growing conservative moment towards extremism in his own brand of Islam..but he also reminded us that it is less than 1% that wanted to adopt the conservative perspective..

They are a sovereign nation. Absent threats to our security, and our interests (including human rights), it is not our business, even though we strongly disagree.

Gibran, first of all, the picture which you posted above, of Jews, is of Jewish MEN- not women. Second of all, those who are covered in that manner are all *choosing to do so*, there is absolutely no law about anyone having to do that, and third of all, they're covered like that for a very brief period of time! That picture was taken during their morning praying. Your explanation for the picture was extremely misleading and reeks of trying to show that in actuality, the major religions are all just parallel, and equal. Except, that's not the case. You absolutely can't compare a woman choosing to become a nun with an entire country and society with laws that force every single woman to wear something that covers their entire body except their eyes and hands. In the actual reality, not the one you might like to exist, not all cultures are equal in every way. Sometimes, one culture is simply more extremist than another.

And though my tone may be a bit harsh, I take offense at the equating of a few Jews choosing to place prayer shawls over their heads for a half hour with an entire country that forces its entire female population to remain ridiculously covered at all times in public.

The tribes in Africa must think we are really backward to require clothing in public.

Don't underestimate the value of clothing to protect our eyes from the lardasses who make up 50% of our population. The people in the "primitive" tribes in Africa are, for the most part, lean and fit.

So would you rather muslim extremists having power? Theprice of oil would be enormous and what little economy ewe have left would evaporate.

The quicker we find a main replacement for oil the better. that is where the money should be going.

so this is really about bashing one group of people again...atwater there were picture of men and women in the ultra Orthodox Jewish community that wear dress that would be consider modest by our standards and that is the point.

The point is that people of different culture should be free to express themselves according to their beliefs...I understand your need to to protect your culture..but if you would have read my post..It clearly says that I disagree with the motives and harshness of the laws in Suadi Arabia..but I included from my google search orthodox Jews ( that was marked women and I didnt iclude a picture clearly of a jewish women with a head covering) and the nuns to show you that many conservatives believe in modesty in dress...where did I say that Jews stone adulters or have honor killings...or that nuns walk around with canes and hit people dressed modernly..

...sometimes in those extremist countries there are people fighting to change laws and when we stereo type the whole country it is just a generalization that show our lackof understanding of the internal struggles going on day to day... I by no means would defend some of the extremist actions of a country but you have to look beyond the veil and see the people first.

Nuns are part of an Order. Jewish women are still visible but modest. I don't think anyone has a problem with hijabs. Burka's, on the other hand, are offensive to me, as a woman and were conceived by men who can't control their dicks.

Unfortunate for Arab women. They're physically beautiful and should be seen by everyone.

agreed totally...I have taught and went to school with many women from the middle-east and it was intersting how each each view their culture and dress... from the hijabs to the burka's..sad to see oppression at any level..and the historical significance is man made not God made.

funny when my friend with a burka was talking to us one day we had a professor tell her he had a dream about her..and her reply was "was I beautiful" we all had a great laugh on that...she had a great sense of humor..

Which we have and enjoy here in this country...for now, until Obama and his regime take it away under the guise of mandatory patriotic and neighbourly tax hikes and government oversight of what once were private industries.

I will help you find the way back...Obama will seize our freedoms by growing government. How so? Arguably the most important freedom is the right to own one's abilities/thoughts and the wealth that they produce. When government buys its' way into business and puts increasing conditions on commerce, we are less free as a country.

Worse, when the mechanism of buying into private enterprise is to print/borrow money setting the stage for hyperinflation, and confiscating more wealth from the countries producers, it will not be long before we see our freedoms melting away.

CC...you do realize that under GWB we had the largest government on record correct? And more personal liberties were lost under his leadership than ever before??? Did you miss that??? Perhaps when he was busy selling off our debt to the Chinese, who for each man, woman, and child in china is owed $4000 dollars by the American Government?

And our debt to the Chinese grows buy a billion dollars a day...YIKES!

cc do you not see the connection between greed and hubris and the problems we are in today.. I would be safe to say we are here based on the neocon agenda that stared during the Reagan years and laid dormant to a degree during Clinton but dominated BushII "regime"....

look at the swing in Europe, Israel and the rest of the world to a restrictive conservative agenda...it is because people are being driven by fear and greed to themselves and only taking care of their own needs.

Netanyahou is conservative (bless him)...the country is not.

Europe is trying to pull back from the precipice that is miserable socialism before it is too late. We will hopefully be right behind them in reversing course (in 2010 and 2012).
