I'm sorry, I'm camera-challenged. I wish I could have gotten a picture of the icebreaker though, because everyone was asking me about that.

The Locks are set to open next Wednesday and the Welland on the 31st. The cutters need to get ahead of the game to keep ships moving.

Never been to a kibbutz, heard about them though, an awful and failed small scale social experiment.

C'mon Mr. Batson! Please do not interpret every post as a personal invitation to comment. It looks like you zipped down the line and commented on 15+ threads today alone.

I started what I thought was a simple post about a cool satellite photo, and it seems you felt the need to add over fifteen posts, most of which have nothing to do with Lake Superior almost freezing over.

I, for one, appreciate your thoughtful comments on a variety of topics. But I'm asking to please stay (mostly) on topic and perhaps pick and choose which threads on which to post.

"Sigh...another comment without any argument in favor of your conclusion."

funny, considering it was made about yet another of your comments that clearly shows your ignorance and makes claims YOU do nothing to support

don't worry Gaz, earth will shake us off like a bad case of fleas eventually

Anyone here compelled by bats' "arguments"?
not including, of course, compelled to laughter
(btw bats, your baseless one-liners are argumentative, but they are NOT arguments. best you learn the difference)

Back to Lake Superior, you guys. The locks opened at 12:01 am this morning. Here is a nice article about it that discusses shipping ups and downs.

The Soo Locks reopen at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. The Coast Guard has had three ice cutters working on the ice in the northern lakes (plus one brought in from Maine for work in the far eastern reaches of the Great Lakes system). The Algostar is expected to be the first boat through the Soo, upward bound and arriving to lock up sometime during the day, bound for Thunder Bay, Ontario, carrying fuel. Major ice-cutting duties aside, though, this may well be a down season for shipping, unless stimulus money kicks in well enough to get domestic steel mills running full blast. But even without iron ore moving from the western end of Lake Superior to steel mills in the lower lakes, there’s regular traffic, especially in coal to fire up a lot of the electricity-generating plants around the Great Lakes.....

just read any of your posts, Bats.

work on demolition of the two old locks should get underway this summer, with construction of the new to follow soon after. this will inject HUGE amounts of money into the UP economy

After reading the article, I tend to agree with the idea that we should try to ship more by freighter where possible. From harbor to delivery point could be a combination of rail and truck. It would save a lot of traffic and roadwork.

Ice? We still have that stuff? Naturally occuring? But Al Gore and his Polar Bears said there wasn't going to be anymore of that stuff.

Better get there quick before Al Gore censors it and revises history to cover it up.

It's only 50 minutes, so I'll have to watch it online, or wait for it to be available on DVD.

AL Gore invented the internet you know (if you don't, just ask him), so he will likely wave his magic wand (the same one that created his mythic tale of doomsday by man made global warming) and erase that video from the internet without a trace.

P...as in Public. Al has lots of flunkies that can shut down the further distribution of this material that flies in the face of his Academy Award and Nobel Prize winning fallacy.

Bats, you have had numerous opportunities to support your claims, yet you never have. You are also evidently trying to use a program you have never seen to discredit Gore. what a sad thing. once again, science trumps ideology for everyone but you and the creationists

the science presented in the nova piece is ok, but the images are spectacular
