Chrysler February sales, while still down sharply, were more than sufficient to beat Honda for the No. 4 rank among the major automakers. They also beat industry analyst estimates by a significant margin. Jesse Toprak of Edmunds.com had predicted a 53 percent shortfall while Brian Johnson of Barclays Capital called for a 55 percent plunge. Closest to the actual figure was Patrick Archambault of Goldman Sachs who was off by just one percent at 45 percent. Archambault was the most optimistic of the seers.

The top automaker in U.S. market share remained General Motors, whose 126,170 vehicles sold (18%) beat the bottom eleven companies combined - which includes Volkswagen, Mazda, BMW, Mercedes, Subaru, and Mitsubishi. A distance behind GM was Toyota, with a 16% share; they were the only other automaker to make six figures. Ford came in at #3 with a 14% share, Chrysler with a 12% share, Honda with a 10% share, and Nissan with 8%. Nipping at Nissan’s heels and breaking the “every new rank is 2% less market share” pattern was Hyundai, whose sales were around 1,600 vehicles less than the company formerly known as Datsun, one of the original Japanese imports. Hyundai and Nissan combined nearly matched Toyota’s sales.

Other automakers, led by Volkswagen with a 3% share, were a good distance behind, and sold at most 18,382 vehicles. Mitsubishi had a mere 4,484 sales, Isuzu limped along with just 350, and Maserati came in with a decent showing at 65 units.

Although, in perspective, we really need to cheer and encourage the whole industry.

One upmanship on a sinking ship doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Lilpup, just posting what AllPar released for Feb sales that's all. I can always research a little deeper to give a basic running total.

CC, in the spirit of us agreeing to disagree, I prefer the U.S. Automakers hold a commanding lead; theoretically we can only hope that healthy competition benefits the entire industry as well as consumers. Our domestics are tied into the foreigns in innumerous ways, so the repercussions can be dangerous for all involved. However, we also need to address how other countries play protectionist, yet insist we keep our markets open for "free trade". Just an observation.

Holding a true commanding lead requires a competitive edge, not pity loyalty.

Nice to have you back and dealing with me directly again Mopardan.

http://blogs.wsj.com/wallet/20 09/03/04/car-discounts-soaring -but-buyers-may-be-tuning-out/

I wonder how much of Chrysler's sales volume is due to the huge incentives that they're giving, $2K larger than others. I've seen pricing here at 35-40% below MSRP on Chrysler vehicles, and one of our three Dodge dealers shut their doors.

If the sales are due to incentives, then this must simply be an inventory clearing at little profit and probably at losses.

From the blog:
Chrysler and GM’s financial travails shouldn’t deter consumers, says Jessica Caldwell, an Edmunds analyst. These companies aren’t likely to disappear overnight, so you can expect warranties to be honored, she says.

The reward for buying will be a cut-rate deal. These days, car makers are offering employee pricing, cash rebates and low financing rates. “You can’t do much more,” Caldwell says. But she says customers may not be fully aware of how low prices really are — the advertised deals are so big and so ubiquitous that some consumers may be tuning out the TV ads.
============================== ==================
The only ads I see here in Texas are for the trucks. Period. Very rarely does one pop up for the Charger, Minivan or the Caliber, which I believe has outsold the Ford Focus lately.
One of the owners of a Dodge dealership consolidated it with his Chrysler/Jeep operations. On top of it they went through a huge renovation as well. I was there in December & talked to a few employees; despite all the problems, everyone was still upbeat. The owner installed a new mgt team & they increased sales dramatically. One thing I found interesting is they were also selling almost every Challenger R/T that came in, not to mention any SRT that hit the lot sold immediately. Only the entry level SE was the slow seller...I figure because it has a 6 instead of an 8.

Mash, thanks for the vote of confidence! :-)

Chrysler edges up in market share
Wednesday, March 4, 2009, 2:54pm CST | Modified: Wednesday, March 4, 2009, 2:59pm
The Business Journal of Milwaukee

Chrysler LLC said Wednesday that its sales throughout the Midwest, the Rockies and the Great Plains posted a 31.5 percent increase in February compared with January, contributing to a rise in market share.

The region exceeded the overall corporate sales performance, which was also strong in February. Nationwide, Chrysler LLC, which has an engine plant in Kenosha, saw an increase in retail industry market share from 9.6 percent to 11 percent in February and outpaced the industry retail sales by 9 percent. Chrysler said it outsold Ford Motor Co. to join the top three volume automotive manufacturers in the United States for only the second time in its history.

Ford (NYSE: F) sales rose 6 percent in February compared with January's totals, while General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) said sales were up nearly 23 percent from January.

Compared with a year ago, however, sales were down dramatically. GM was down 53 percent from February 2008, while Ford was off 48 percent and Chrysler was down 40 percent.

Wisconsin dealers contributed to Chrysler's rising market share, according to data from Chrysler's Denver Business Center, which represents dealerships in 14 Midwest, Plains and Western states.

"Together with our strong Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge dealer partners, we are able to help our customers with a great product value during these challenging economic times," said Fred Diaz, director of the Chrysler's Denver Business Center.

Statistical gymnastics. Comparing any month to one of the worst ever will yield very strange and meaningless conclusions.

Given that GM and Chrysler are now partially nationalized, should they be measured on the same scale as Ford (for now)?

Chrysler exec says February sales on target

From the article:
DETROIT: Even though its sales were down 44 percent last month, Chrysler LLC Vice Chairman Jim Press said the automaker is on target to meet sales projections outlined in its viability plan submitted to Congress last month.

Chrysler sold just over 84,000 cars and trucks in February, 44 percent fewer than the 150,000 it sold the same month last year.

But Press said in an interview with The Associated Press on Friday that 84,000 in February is enough to keep the company going. He says retail sales to individuals dropped 25 percent, but that was a lower decline than any of Chrysler's competitors.

Dodge Ram grabs 20 percent of full-size pickup sales in February
March 11th, 2009
by Bill Cawthon

One in five full-size pickups sold last month was a Dodge Ram, which outperformed all its competitors by retaining the highest percentage of it February 2008 numbers. The Ram’s 20 percent share was its best showing in five years as the segment became crowded with additional entries from Ford and GM and new trucks from Toyota and Nissan.

The 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 continued its winning streak as it beat the Ford F-Series pickup by winning the New England Motor Press Association’s (NEMPA) 2009 Winter Vehicle Award as Best-In-Class Pickup. This is the thirteenth award the new Ram has won since its introduction.

"Best products and services at the lowest prices wins the day...every day."

I think Bernie Madoff would disagree.
