quote:Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography. A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states. "When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School. However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds. "Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says. http://www.newscientist.com/ar ticle/dn16680-porn-in-the-usa- conservatives-are-biggest-cons umers.html?DCMP=OTC-rss&nsref= online-news ...and we wondered what they did while not posting the talking points. |

This study lacks both statistical and scientific rigor. From the article, headlined "Porn in the USA: Conservatives are biggest consumers":
quote:Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election – Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. Using the same simplistic approach as this study used, one can also mistakenly conclude and write a headline saying: "Blacks in the USA: the GOP's most reliable voters". That's because if you limit your analysis to only state level data, one could justify such a headline by looking at US Census data and the election results, which show that the four states with the most blacks as a percentage of population (MS, LA, SC & GA) all gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election. Of course, such a conclusion is rubbish, just as is the conclusion of this report. More analysis here: Less porn, more math |

From the above statements - "Blacks in the USA: the GOP's most reliable voters".
quote:as a percentage of population (MS, LA, SC & GA) all gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election. Blacks by percentage - Ms 36.15% La 32.30% Sc 29.37% Ga 28.48% Far from the majority, in those states, Mikeg. I don't know where that argument is going. http://www.censusscope.org/us/s28/chart_race.html (Message edited by Bigb23 on March 03, 2009) |

There is no state where blacks are the majority. I was describing the four states with the highest percentages of blacks relative to the total population of the state. The point is that you'll get nowhere trying to make any kind of an argument when you draw a conclusion based on the wrong kind of data. If the Porn study had found a correlation using ZIP Code or County level data instead of state level data, it would have been a meaningful conclusion. |

I think Bigb's point was that these are states where conservatives make up the majority, not a sizable minority. It's by no means statistically significant, but you've got to admit it's interesting, especially with Utah at #1. |

When the author of this study concludes that.... quote:On the whole, these adult entertainment subscription patterns show a remarkable consistency: all but eleven states have between two and three subscribers to this service per thousand broadband households, and all but four have between 1.5 and 3.5. With interest in online adult entertainment relatively constant across regions, there's little sign of a major divide. ....then political bias is the only explanation for a headline that reads: "Porn in the USA: Conservatives are biggest consumers" Believe that if you want, but I remains skeptical of any report that gets hyped by the media unless I can read the details and form my own opinion. |
