Has anyone else noticed the underground structure that construction workers dug up recently? It's on the construction site for the new cruise ship terminal (along the south side of Atwater between the Hart Plaza police station and the Renaissance Center). It's closer to the police station and fairly close to the water. The structure looks like the foundation of a building (or a basement). It has two rows of rooms connected by doorways with no hallways. Last I saw it, the crews had uncovered two rows of five rooms. Anyone hear anything about what this is? |

Hey Huggybear, I posted a photo and asked the same question yesterday. The only feedback offered was to investigate old pics on the wayne.edu historical photo archive. https://www.atdetroit.net/forum/mes sages/5/177302.html?1237999964 |

Oh brother. How long do you think before the posters from the "Lafayette Building" thread demand an immediate stop to construction of the PA terminal? :D |

Well if it has any archeoogical significance it would be common sense to stop, unearth whatever is there, and remove it so construction can continue. During the building of the RenCen there were findings, so it isn't illogical that something would be there. |

Thejesus, The difference here is that progress is being made. A dirt lot or parking lot is not progress. |

"Well if it has any archeoogical significance it would be common sense to stop" I would agree with that, but it's unlikely we're dealing with an archaeological finding here. It's most likely just part of the man-made portions of the river bank. The riverbank didn't always have sidewalks and rails and concrete walls. Back in the day, it was piles of mud and rocks. |

They may have unearthed a part of the structure to any one of the old pharmaceutical businesses that were housed in the area. I remember going on a job interview back in the 60s to one of those places around Atwater. |

That building could have been on the old River Road, which preceded the 1805 Detroit fire, and was around long before Jefferson and Atwater Streets were developed. |

And please tear it down in a manner that ensures lots of collateral damage to nearby structures. It looks more impressive that way. |

^^^Ooooooh, good idea! That way, when the People Mover is shut down for 3 years, we can show how nobody rides mass transit in Detroit, and they won't waste all that money on the stupid streetcar and commuter rail plans. |

It doesn't look like it was there in the DTE 1949 aerial (if I am oriented correctly). It looks like it was a paved-over area near the loading docks for Bob-Lo boats. In 1796, that area was a Navy Yard, or just east of that yard. |

Imagine how much more employment there would be if the city had stayed low rise instead of consolidating companies into high-rises. All that building maintenance and transportation! It's the blank area in front of the PLC shown on that Sanborn (unless they're having to mess with something for the tunnel - electrical or ventilation)? (Message edited by lilpup on March 26, 2009) |

Employment alone isn't the answer. If it were, we'd be delighted every time we opened a prison or started a war. |
