Fact: Detroit has witnessed many championship seasons on the part of its glorious professional teams.
Fact: Dozens of amateur athletes have represented Detroit in the Olympic Games; this thread is dedicated in their honor.
Here are just a few:

Eddie Tolan, Cass Tech HS: (1932) 100 & 200 meter dash - Gold Medalist
Lorenzo Wright, Miller HS: (1948) Long Jump - Bronze Medalist; 400 meter relay - Gold Medalist
Henry Carr, Northwestern HS: (1964) 200 meter dash & 1600 meter relay - Gold Medalist

The first one to come to mind that I remember was Sheila Young of Denby High School. She was a speed skater in the 70's and quite well known. She made the cover of Kelloggs corn flakes.

Doug Brown born in Detroit went to HS at Harper Woods Notre Dame ran in 2 Olympics and qualified for the Moscow games which were boycotted, plus was an Asst. Coach in Atlanta in 1996.

1972 Munich - 3,000m Steeplechase (Tennessee); 1976 Montreal - 3,000m Steeplechase (Knoxville Track Club); 1980 Moscow - 3,000m Steeplechase (Athletics West); 1996 Atlanta - Assistant Coach, Men's Track and Field
