Django,

I'm sorry to say I don't have any pics of Brandy; I suspect there might be a few in the family photo album, but I'm in a different city now, so don't have the pictures.

Brandy looked a bit like a red lion. He was probably 70-80lbs, was pretty red with a black curly tail and black tongue (that typical chow characteristic). He looked pretty mean when he smiled but he was a big pussy cat.

We never really knew how old he was -- but we got in him the mid 70's and had him until he had to be put down (he was a very old guy by then), so I want to say we had 7 or 8 years. My memory on the dates is fuzzy, and I moved out of my parents' house sometime during those years.

We used to joke that Brandy was responsible for the east side stray population. His stud days were over once he moved in with our family -- he didn't get to wander the neighborhoods freely anymore.

I'll dig through the photo albums and see if I can find a pic of the Ladder 22 mascot who found a home with us!

He was just a black and white mutt. More of a Benji looking dog...Brilliant, too.

Here is Smiley, Ladder 22s mascot. This is just after a dip in the pool (we had an in-ground pool and he would just hop in).

That's a good video! Is your dad in any of the photos? He was on a fireboat at one point wasn't he?

Yes, dad was in charge of the fireboat at one point. I didn't recognize him in any of the photos but he might have been in a few of the "house on fire" photos where the person isn't recognized.

I don't know if any of you attended, E.31's celebration was fun. I will try to get "Mad dog" to post photos. D.F.D. you lost your chance.
At todays Frankenmuth Muster the restored rig of E.38 belongs to a gentleman in Canada.
Devastating news with the court allowing the reorganization of the D.F.D. Not enough manpower now. As I type a third alarm is in progress in an abandoned church at Woodward and Edmund Place. Box 652.

Those are great photos of Eng. 31, Dfd, especially the oldie. When I worked at the 2nd Precinct (Vernor), the building was also an Election district, and several times I was assigned there for election duty. Hated that assignment as it was boring as hell, but the coffee provided by Eng. 31 made it bearable. So...a belated, "Thanks, guys".

Ray, were you on election duty recently?
Tony, wow, that's bad news. I hope the guys don't suffer.
That could be a whole new thread.

Ray : The rig is a 1938 Seagrave . The gentleman who owens it was raised on Scotten. His family still resides there. He tracked down the rig and restored it. The rig is on permanent display at the Ypsi. fire museum. It shares space with an Arens-Fox piston pumper owned by the same gentleman. The "FOX" is Ex. D.F.D. E.13.
D.F.D.: You are correct. To read more go to

My fellow guide and I met some wonderful firemen at the New Center fire station. We looked in to check out the ceiling and the subway tile. The fellows came out and began to talk to us. What a bunch of sweethearts. Salt of the earth.
