Now...if we can pay NU back for last year...and contain a less mobile version of Lewis...Michigan State could conceivably be sitting at 6-1 when OSU comes to town...

Please MSU...You guys seem different this year, prove it to the spartan faithful.

Also...I like how MSU being ranked gets ZERO press in the Freep/DetNews...but michigan tanking again...gets prime real estate, I love it!

The blue wall is real.

As far as the upcoming game. I think our secondary is better, deeper, and more disciplined than last season. I also think we will do a solid job of shutting down their running attack.

It sure feels good. We'll need a perfect game, but I think we can give the Buckeyes a run for their money.

EL...I don't know about perfect...Wisconsin gave them a handful, MAC teams have given them fits.

Bend but don't break, and get solid special teams play. Dink and dive for 3-4 yard gains, and peice together long drives...Make Prior look like the freshman that he is...Plus, you get 77-80k people at Spartyville...

Place will be rockin!

No. 11 Ohio State v. No. 17 Michigan State

I hope so mcc I hope so. There are some BIG keys to the game that need to happen in order for MSU to win.

Overall
1. Win the field position battle. Make their freshman QB march the ball down the field on long drives in order to score and give our offense a short field to work with against a very tough Buckeye defense.

2. Win the turnover battle. When two physical, defensive, run oriented teams get together, a game can change on an explosive play like a turnover.

3. Win the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. We can't move the ball if we can't run and if Ohio State can find consistent success on the ground then it opens up their passing attack.

Offense
1. Force Ohio State to commit extra guys to stop the run. Ringer will get some yards. It's just a given, but even if he only gets between 80 and 100, if you can force the Buckeyes to bring an 8th or 9th guy into the box to do it, then it will open up the passing game. bringing those extra guys down will allow for single coverage on one of our big receivers.

2. Have to have big plays. OSU's defense is too good to slowly and consistently march down the field against on a regular basis. The offense will HAVE to pick up some yardage in chunks from time to time.

Defense
1. Make Pryor a passer. Beanie Wells is an outstanding tailback and Pryor is a gifted runner in his own right. However, Pryor is a freshman who will make bad freshman mistakes when pressured. Force him into 3rd and long situations by shutting down the running game.

It's a tall task, but it can be done.

Yup, while we're def. the underdog, this game is a winnable one if the execution is there.

And seeing as how Coach D has been stressing execution...I'm excited!

Watch the points keep growing,
Spartan teams are bound to win,
They're fighting with a vim!
Rah! Rah! Rah!
See their team is weakening,
We're going to win this game,
Fight! Fight! Rah! Team, Fight!
Victory for MSU!

I wouldnt say your "def the underdog". Playing at home I would say its a toss up. Of course I am not a Vegas better.
MSU has an excellent chance for this game and the schedule looks great for the rest of the year, its setup perfect

Admittedly, this is not my work, I took it from another website, but still interesting none the less:

Passing

MSU 192 yds/gm, 224 yds/TD, 0.86 TD/gm, 3.4% INT/completion, 51% completion rate
OSU 144 yds/gm, 126 yds/TD, 1.14 TD/gm, 3.8% INT/completion, 65% completion rate

MSU is allowing 227 yds/game, but also 227 yds/TD and holds opponents to 53% completion rate. MSU defense gets 3 INTs for every 1 committed by the offense.
OSU is allowing 165 yds/game, but also only 165 yds/TD and holds opponents to 55% completion rate. OSU defense gets 2.5 INTs for every 1 committed by the offense.

MSU offense allows 0.6 sacks per game with the defense making 1.6 sacks per game.
OSU offense allows 2.7 sacks per game with the defense making 1.6 sacks per game.

MSU passing has improved every week. Expect 200 yards and a TD, 1 INT, 1 sack.
OSU will be over its average. Expect 180 yards and a TD, 1 INT, 3 sacks.

Rushing

MSU gains 177 yds/gm, 2.3 TDs/gm, averages 3.9 yds/carry, and scores a TD for every 77 yds.
OSU gains 177 yds/gm, 1.1 TD/gm, averages 4.5 yds/carry, and scores a TD for every 155 yds.

MSU defense allows 135 yds/gm, 4.5 yds/carry, 0.9 TD/gm and allows 1 TD in 157 yds
OSU defense allows 104 yds/gm, 3.6 yds/carry, 0.4 TD/gm and allows 1 TD in 242 yds

Expect both teams to run about 150 yards and OSU to score 1 TD and MSU to score 2 TDs.

Kicking

Both teams average 2.1 FGs per game. MSU has the edge with 15 of 16 versus 15 of 19. OSU has missed 1 PAT in 18 kicks. MSU is 23 for 23.

Both teams are getting around 65 yards on kick-offs with just under 2 touchbacks per game. MSU opponents got 5 yards more on KO returns than OSU allowed its opponents.

Punting is roughly the same for both at 40 yds or so per punt. Punt returns are also about the same.

Field Position

MSU possessions start on the 34 yardline (average) and MSU opponents start on the 27 yardline (average)
OSU possessions start on the 35 yardline (average) and OSU opponents atart on the 26 yardline (average)

Turnovers

MSU is commiting 0.9 TOs per game with opponents committing 2.3 TOs per game
OSU is committing 1.4 TOs per game with opponents committing 2.1 TOs per game

MSU is better at returning TOs (17.4 yds/INT) than OSU (8.0 yds/INT).

Scoring

MSU 30 to 17 (23 TDs, 23 PATs, 15 FGs, 1 S)
OSU 24 to 14 (18 TDs, 17 PATs, 15 FGs, 0 S)

SOS for both is about 65 when taking into account Youngstown St which is I-AA.

Red zone for both is about 90%.

Summary

These are 2 very well matched teams.

The factors that will decide the outcome is 3 MSU sacks and 1 OSU fumble that results in a Spartan TD.

The OSU defense will be tested to see if it can handle 40+ rushes by Ringer. Ringer will be tested by the OSU rush defense.

The depleted MSU pass defense will be depending on a solid pass rush.

Final Score

MSU 21 OSU 14

Jimbo

The Spartan Student body is calling for a "Green Out" on Saturday, the goal is to make the entire stadium look like...and I quote "Christmas"

Spartan students should take note, that to most people, that would imply snow, and therefore...a white out...

I personally think a Green and White out would be better...if the students could organize that so that every other section is green then white...now THAT would be impressive

Dantonio isn't going anywhere. He's slowly building a juggernaut here in East Lansing built around tried and true philosophies of football. Play solid defense and control the ball with the running game.

As time goes on and MSU becomes more talented, I think the offense will open up a bit more and become more dynamic. However, when MSU goes up against the Penn States, Ohio States, Michigans, Wisconsins, and even the Iowas of the world, they don't have the talent just yet to outgun them. Therefore, they have to slow the game down and grind out wins. Which is exactly what they are doing now.

It's an exciting time to be a Spartan and I'm looking forward with cautious optimism towards a highly competitive game this coming Saturday.

Ut oh...from SI:

No. 12 Ohio State at No. 20 Michigan State, 3:30 p.m., ABC

Despite winning four straight after a loss at the Coliseum, Ohio State hasn't moved up in the rankings partly because they're Ohio State (no one wants to put them in position for another BCS title disaster) and partly because they're not very good. The Buckeyes should be exposed by the Spartans, who have won six straight and will try to make it seven for the first time in 30 years.

Bummer. All the keys to the game I said we needed to do in order to win we didn't do. Add that to the fact that, as I said before, they were already the more talented team and you get a blowout.

Lick the wounds, get healthy, and get ready for Michigan next week.

It will be the clash of two pissed-off teams. Should be good theatre. Even as UM's hopes dwindled away late in the fourth Rodriguez looked disgusted with his team's play. PSU will likely be in the BCS championship game, so I think he may have been overreacting a bit, but I know that both he and Dantonio will be drilling their teams hard this week.

Next week is big week in the conference. The game in Columbus will tell us who the presumptive big ten champion and BCS candidate will be, and the game in Ann Arbor will tell us if MSU has changed or if this season will follow their typical course.

I could see this one coming.
In the two previous games MSU has given up an average of around a 150 yards to the opposing teams top rusher. Their run defense has been absolutely terrible. A few weeks ago against Iowa there were holes that Shonn Green's grandmother could have run through.
It's not surprising that Wells and Pryor ran all over them.

The biggest issue with the defense was that the defensive ends were biting on the fake to Wells that allowed Pryor running room. That kept a LOT of drives alive when they should have died. MSU HAS to correct that because that play is the bread and butter of the Michigan offense. Containing McGuffie will be difficult enough, but MSU cannot afford let Threet/Sheridan pick up yards on the ground.

State news from today. Sounds more like it was mostly hockey players. Charges aren't getting filed until end of the week or early next. I'd imagine they'll slow walk it if any "name" f-ballers were involved.

question going around the office, and I have no idea; How many losses does it take to strip UM of that stupid most wins/highest winning percentage title? I seem to remember that not too long ago it was almost a game for game battle with ND, but that was before the 2007 debacle.

Because UM threads make me itch. I think it's a reaction to the Chinese sweatshop/Walmart attire sported by the typical UM fan.

Wikipedia held the answer....well at least up to this season. UM 869/.745, ND 826/.739, Texas 820/.716.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C ollege_football's_ten_most_victorious_program s
It would seem UM's title rests on ties and being in the game 10-15 years longer and playing 30-50 more games than #2 and #3.

looks like UM would need a decade of futility to lose the all time victory lead... however on percentages, look at Boise state. 40 years in the game and a 69% winning percentage. interesting.

Where do you get this from Kenp? remember the big thing with SirDarean Adams and TJ Williams broke during Michigan week last season. Dantonio didn't have some magic wand to convince the police to wait until the season last year. What makes you think he will someone be able to do it with this incident when it appears to be much worse? I'm guessing that the full report, including arrests, will come out sometime monday.

Its all about damage control. Take for instance last year. The fact that Adams and Williams were arrested and charged with un-armed robbery and still allowed to play football is a little curious.
However I do know that while I attended MSU the Police and DPS were a..holes. Something you might not see at other colleges.

Congrats to those of you on this thread.

I thought UM would have had more running game consistency, and forgot that when Ringer gets any room (it only happened 2 or 3 times) he's gone, but I shouldn't have. You guys did not miss your golden opportunity.

Superior team right now. 67-29-5.

I truly pleasing win...although I must say that we probably should have won by a LOT more except we shot ourselves in the foot a few times. As it was, it was the biggest margin of victory by MSU since 1967 and it could have been much worse.

Loved this:

Ringer left a favorable impression on Florida Atlantic coach Howard Schnellenberger after rushing for a career-high 282 yards in an early September rain storm. More than anything Schnellenberger was impressed with the O-line. "That's the big problem," he said, "having to sort through those five big guys to find where he (Ringer) is. When they all come off at one time they look like a herd of water buffalo stampeding at you, and there's a gazelle somewhere in behind them."

This is a game MSU would have lost last year. MSU is a program continuing to grow. The amount of rushing yards that State allowed today is concerning. However, I believe the MSU defensive line will improve greatly in the next couple of years. Mark Dantonio is winning with a large number of John L. Smith players, many of whom were not exactly considered Big Ten talent. When Dantonio recruited players become the core of the depth chart this program will make the Big Ten very interesting. In my opinion the former walk-on Blair White was the player of the game.

I agree, Whithorn. Dantonio is getting EVERYTHING he can out of JLS upperclassmen and throwing a lot of young guys of his own in there for significant minutes. In a few years, we will have a LOT of experience and depth.
