I believe this Portrait of America telephone poll will clear things up for you.

quote:

1. What professional sport are you most likely to watch on television? Are you more likely to watch baseball, basketball, football, soccer, tennis, golf, hockey, or some other professional sport? *Asked only of TV sport watchers

48% - Football

19% - Baseball

12% - Basketball

10% - Golf

5% - Some other sport

2% - Hockey

I still can not understand why Golf ranks above Hockey for TV viewing. Golf is sooooo boring. I like to play the sport, but it's so slow to watch. Unless you have a couple players going putt for putt to win a major, and they're on the back 9, there's really no drama. At least in NASCAR you get entertained by occasional crashes (or at least used to), while waiting for the drama and anticipation to heat up in the final 20 laps.

The Detroit coaches are pretty much slotted where they belong among their coaching peers in their sports. I believe Babcock is now the highest paid NHL coach. Leyland is the 5th or 6th highest paid MLB coach and that's probably where he belongs. Curry is probably in the bottom quarter of NBA coaches. There aren't many if any NBA coaches that make less than a million. I'm sure the same applies to Marinelli.

These folks are getting paid what their markets will bear.

It's not indicative of how popular their sports are in the Detroit area.
