Project JOB TITLE: Market Master LOCATION: 14600 Mack Detroit, MI 48215 JOB START DATE: April 2009 JOB END DATE: Undetermined PEOPLE NEEEDED: 1 HOURS/WEEK: 10-15 hrs/wk AVAILABILITY: Weekdays, every Saturday from July through September 2009 RATE/HOUR: $12 REPORTS TO: G.R.O.W. staff and Project Management Group The objective of the East Warren Avenue Farmers Market (EWAFM) is to support Local Farmers and their farm-related micro-enterprises that will in turn increase the fresh produce and nutrition available to residents. EWAFM only offers Michigan grown produce, features urban produce, and only allows handcrafted arts to be sold. EWAFM also strives to serve as a learning corridor for new farmers and entrepreneurs—nurturing and teaching them through hands on market experience. Responsibilities Market Activities: • On a weekly basis, create a basic layout of the market to create a welcoming market and provide the optimal shopping experience • Communicate space assignments to vendors • Transport market supplies to and from site • Coordinate, set up, and take down market tents, tables, signs, and other market equipment • Collect vendor fees • Enforce market rules, food safety guidelines, and other relevant rules and regulations • Handle emergencies, complaints, and customer requests • Manage the surveying of shoppers on a bi-weekly basis • Keep track of the number of shoppers each week • Maintain positive, equitable relationships with all market vendors • Collect and redeem Project Fresh Coupons • Obtain any permits or insurances if necessary • If needed, work with vendors on the presentation of their produce • General outreach at the market for new G.R.O.W. participants, vendors, and volunteers • Maintain and disseminate weekly market newsletter Market Organization and Development: • Recruit and retain a strong vendor base with a strong emphasis on gaining urban producers • Work with the Board and other G.R.O.W. staff to establish community support for the market •Plan and execute special events, community outreach, sponsorships, and promotions •Maintain market data and database •Oversee market music and entertainment •Coordinate, train, and supervise market volunteers •Solicit financial support and grants for market operations Community Outreach: • Promote the market • Build community relations with local businesses, nonprofit agencies, neighborhood associations, etc. Furthermore, coordinate the participation of these groups in market activities and events whenever possible • Coordinate and promote special events that provide family friendly and educational activities for the community • Take all possible steps to create and maintain a positive, welcoming, and fully-accessible market environment • Create and implement a marketing plan. This would include a combination of press releases, media coverage, newspaper ads and featured articles, newsletters, and website information Financial Management: • Work with the Board and G.R.O.W. Staff to establish an annual budget and monitor budget compliance • Maintain records of all market expenditures • Maintain updated records of all financial sponsorships and vendor payments • Obtain and maintain market liability insurance Required Qualifications: • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Publisher • Excellent ability to communicate verbally and in writing • Experience with project management, program coordination, and event planning • Strong organizational skills • Excellent people skills: friendly, outgoing, tactful, able to listen • Conflict resolution skills • Ability to write basic reports and manage the markets database • Experience working with divers stakeholders • Knowledge of and interest in agriculture and food system issues • Reliable transportation and valid drivers license and insurance • Committed to the idea of a farmers market • Must be able to lift and move at least 50lbs on a regular basis Preferences: • An Eastside Detroit resident • Proven success writing grants and fundraising are a plus • Public speaking experience is desirable |
