If projectile vomiting and sudden levitation occurs as a result of those creepy billboards, then there is cause for concern. And, hey kids, don't forget to answer the door when the Satan's Witnesses come a'knockin'.

The reaction reminds me of the humorous architectural faux pas when the MGM Grand opened in Vegas.

From Wikipedia's MGMGrand/History:
quote:

Originally, the main entrance on the Strip was inside the mouth of a giant cartoon-like version of MGM's mascot, Leo the Lion, but this entrance feature was changed to a more traditional entrance; many Chinese gamblers avoided the casino or entered through the back entrance, due to the feng shui belief that entering the mouth of the lion was "bad luck." In 1998, a large bronze statue of Leo was added above the entrance to keep with the MGM Lion theme, while not scaring away their more superstitious guests.

Lodge,

Thanks for reminding me of Gatsby - that was always one of my favorite pieces of cover or poster art.

Anytime, Otter. Hope they didn't pay the ad co. too much. The billboard in the movie was creepy--like the eyes of God.

I'm with Oldstuff. What about the environment a ground level folks! Blight is everywhere, unemployment is high, City of Detroit has a rising deficit and we are overly concerned about a BILLBOARD! I would like to understand HOW people priortize.

Ohferchrissakes. I don't see anything to complain about.
I don't expect anything but horseshit from the handful of local loudmouth "pastors" and "reverends," but given the long-- and growing-- list of Detroit crises, problems and dilemmas, I am annoyed to hear from Tinsley-Talabi on such a trifling matter, although the truth is that I didn't expect much from her, either.

Councilwoman Alberta Tinsley-Talabi said Friday she was shocked by the billboard, calling it "sinister"...

hmmmn...

now sinister would be playing videos of council meetings in reverse, 1/3 off speed, to see if Monica's voice ia actually satan's, calling for the election of the council by wards while the eyes glow brighter and suddenly become working streetlights and morph into flashing red-amber-green signals like traffic signals used to before they turned half of them off to save $$$. You remember working traffic signals, don't you? Scary!!!

I see how the ad could be off-putting, to some, but then again I've seen many ads that do that. This just further goes to show me that Detroit must stop electing "church ladies" to city council, already.

You know, Tinsley-Talabi seems to find the eyes vulgar/demonic. The only thing I find vulgar and offensive is that Tinsley-Talabi switched her vote on the Cobo deal (really, what was she given and by whom? lol), killing it.

Her's a woman trying to find the devil in everything, instead of seeing the devils where they actually are, and in Detroit that place is in every aspect of the environment, social and phyisical.

I have one word for Tinsley-Talabi, and the rest of the city council in general: priorities.

I agree LMichigan,...they need to get their priorities in check. Cobo hall expansion and budget concerns,....not billboard eyes. They are all a disgrace, a joke and we need to vote them out. Election year is here! New blood and sound judgement is what we need. Not reaction to sinister eyes and race-baiting!

I am shocked that no one has brought this up. Nipsey said:

She has no problems with all the effin' alcohol ads plastered all around the city, or the abandoned houses or the fact that half the street lights don't work in this city. But she's effin' worried about a pair of yellow eyes?

Not true Nipsey. In fact Alberta Tinsley Talabi began her career as a crusader against Alcohol advertisments on billboards near schools and playgrounds:

http://www.ci.detroit.mi.us/le gislative/CityCouncil/Members/ Talabi/talabi_resolutions.htm

http://www.facesandvoicesofrec overy.org/pdf/johnson_intervie w_2007.pdf

She has a history of monitoring billboards and has frankly a point as they do look sinister and many not be suitable for young children. I have heard more than one complaint from parents.

I wonder how these billboards are being perceived in suburban communities, because I am sure they are not just in Detroit. Or are they?

Raptor, the solution to your digital dilemma is only seven words away..
"Twelve gauge, birdshot, magnum load, rifled barrel."
Get an incredibly wide pattern thataway..
Not that I would ever condone or recommend destruction of private property just because it's an annoying nuisance, mind you...

My guess is that this is a teaser campaign for a Cirque de Soleil show. They have had a long relationship with MGM Mirage. Their ad campaigns, heck even their web site, has similar images. It would only make sense for them to bring a show to Detroit.

I think they look kinda cool. Hey, they are doing their job of getting attention so to that I guess I think they are great. wouldn't expect them to hire someone to not get the work out.

Meh, it's been done before.
3DFX's Voodoo cards for computers, circa 2001.

http://www.techspot.com/review s/hardware/voodoo3-3000/box.jp g

Of course, that company went out of business, so I guess it is ok to take their gimmick.

I think we deserve challenging advertising. Any other large city has dramatic and mature advertisement.

Does anyone else feel like Detroit's billboards are a little dumbed down?

In the same way that Detroiters can handle challenging architecture (Rosa Parks Transit Center, Motor City Casino), we can also handle witty and modern advertisement.

I don't like being advertised to, but what I dislike even more is feeling like my intelligence is being insulted by sub par media.

"In the same way that Detroiters can handle challenging architecture (Rosa Parks Transit Center)"

Let's be honest . . . it looks like a giant Sonic.

At any rate, there are a lot of other structures in the city that the council should worry about tearing down (that actually pose physical danger) before fussing about a damn billboard.

CharcoalGreySoul...I still have the purple colored Voodoo3 2000 box from those old days.

3DFX went out of business while I was on the clock at CompUSA, and we had no idea what to do with the merchandise, so I got my pick.

I have to admit, those boxes were very compelling marketing. They drew the customers to them. It is pretty obvious the parallels here with MGM's marketing strategy.

Anybody who feels that the billboard is a demon glaring at them must have serious moral qualms about themselves!

You have just validated this ad campaign. Some creative director is eating a steak right now due to this discussion. If you are talking about it, the news, city council....that means you have seen it, or will or want to see it, or wonder who put it up... which is WHY it was put up to begin with.

^ Yeah, it makes me wonder if Alberta Tinsley-Talabi isn't receiving some sort of kickback from MGM. I'd like to think she's crazy like a fox, but unfortunaely I think she's just crazy.

"It looks like a demon glaring at you; nobody with kids in their car should be forced to look at that. No Christian should."

Maybe you should just never leave your fucking house so demonic billboards can't offend your sensibilities, jackass.
