Michigan's Fab Five will appear together as part of NCAA men's basketball Final Four festivities in Detroit.

The Ann Arbor News reports that Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson are scheduled to take part in an April 4 charity event at the Motor City Casino. The event will benefit the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.

I thought all memory of these "fab 5" and their teams were wiped from existance a couple years ago thanks to Mr. Weber? Think there will be any visible animosity over their record being stricken from the books between Weber and the other 4 who allegedly did not receive money?

I assume this not an NCAA sanctioned event, as according to them these guys never existed. Leave it to Detroit though to host a gathering to celebrate a group that was corrupt and broke the rules. That is what we do best around here...

How can you not like the Fab 5? They brought baggy shorts in from the streets and onto the hardwood.

The baggy shorts went from the hardwood to the streets, not the other way around.

How fitting, the team assembled by a numbers runner uniting at a casino.

I am surprised this is the best local basketball story the Charles H. Wright Museum could come up with for a fundraiser. Surely there must be at least one local basketball story with more integrity then the Fraud Five??

You might want to express your displeasure with the choice of the so-called Fab Five for the charity event with those persons who matter at the Charles Wright Museum. They might not be aware of the controversy surrounding certain players. I like the idea of honoring Mateen Cleaves or some other local basketball player.

Whenever the fab 5 comes up, I just say....."What exactly is the Fab 5.....I've heard of them but nobody can really prove their existance. A Fab 5 must be kind of like a unicorn or a witch."

The Fab Five are legends and I can't wait to see them. Nobody cares about some corrupt UM booster from years ago or the sanctions he brought. Detroit's own Jalen Rose and Chris Webber, both of whom are now among NBA broadcasting's best voices, merit more attention than Mateen Cleaves. Plus they've got the other three for bonus nostalgia. People are going to be excited about this. All the criticism is silly.

Sciencefair, Thanks for the link. I left a message with them regarding the career of Chris Webber at Michigan. Michigan basketball has yet to recover from the sanctions imposed upon it because of Chris Webber's actions.

How can you say nobody cares about the corruption from the Fab Five era? Thanks to the sanctions brought on by that scandal UM basketball has been in the pits for over a decade. Every single D1 program in the State of Michigan has made the tournament since UM did last in 1998.

MSU, WMU, EMU, OU, and UDM have all reached a more successful plateau than UM since 1998. That should be an embarrassment to any school that claims to be the "Leaders and best."

Look, I'm not a Michigan fan, but I just dont understand how you can celebrate something that brought shame and penalty to the University that many claim to love. If it was the school I support I would not look forward to this occasion.

I wonder if the NCAA gave back all the money they made off the FAB 5

Gotta love a wonderful, happy celebration of cheating and corruption. What the hell are they thinking?

Ed Martin was terrible and gave away lots of loans. Chris Webber, while in his teens, was one of the many people who took a loan from Ed Martin. Chris Webber then paid him back. This was terrible because Chris Webber was a member of sacred order of Amateur Athletes and was not allowed to take loans and then pay them back.

Rules were broken, legacies tarnished, lousy NIT banners removed, etc, etc., and then people moved on. UM basketball has been in the tank since then mostly because of the ineptitude of its coaches since then. Its two years of sanctions are over. People remember the good ol' days fondly and don't blame the then-kid who took the loan he wasn't supposed to take.

There is nothing to be outraged over, Detroiters. Find an A-Rod thread somewhere for your stale sanctimony.

You can say what you want, but the fab five made alot of money for college basketball. Three of the five got 100 million dollar contracts in the N.B.A., and have given back to their communities in so many ways. How can you blame a teenager for something he should've gotten paid for in the first place, and he paid the money back.

It's not that these gentlemen aren't fine athletes and quite possibly fine human beings, it's the fact that the Fab Five most likely would have been the Terrific Two or Three without the influence of Ed Martin and his involvement in recruiting. The players and certain individuals in the program broke rules to get ahead, and that is not something that we should be honoring as the spotlight shines on our city.
