By which I mean the restaurant on 8 Mile near Woodward. Has anyone ever been there? What is it like? The location is weird enough that I find it surprising it has any customers, but it has been open forever, so somebody must patronize it.

Not to thread-jack, but does Stanley's Other Place have a connection with (former) Stanley's in the New Center Area.

yes, it relocated there. It has been there for a long time. I would often go to the old one on Milwaukee. I don't think I have ever been to the Other Place.

Thanks Claire. :-)

I suppose that answers Mwilbert's question too.

They have a bar, but no stools. You can drink only if you order meals. Otherwise, it's just an old-time Chinese place.

I hear the food is terrible, thus the sparsly filled parking lot.

It's pretty amazing that a place with terrible food has been around since Hastings and Canfield crossed.

I enjoy the food. It is served hot and seems good. It is traditional 1950s/1960s Chinese food. The dining room stays open late, but not as late as 2-3 years ago, when it did a good business til 3 am on Fri/Sat. They are NOT open for lunch either.

Their Hot and Sour soup for 2 and Dr. Hong's Combination Plate are two of my favorites.......

I have been there several times, and every time have had good food and good service.

Living in Green Acres in the mid 80s, I took dates there a few times. If memory serves me, it was dimly lit and rather quiet. That ambience would be why I'd have taken dates there :-)

Stanley's is one of the many Detroit classics that gets looked over, until they close and then everyone gets in a uproar about why everything in our city is closing down. Please support our local restaurants and businesses when you can.

I first went there on a date as well.

Also, Kelley L. Carter, whom I really liked as a Freep Entertainment reporter put this as one of her favorite things on 8 mile (an article she did when 8 mile came out). She also put the Buddha Lounge, which has mutated since then, but I believe the funds from selling the place turned into Slow's!!

Kelley is now at the LA Times.....
