It seems like nothing is going to hold this woman back. During a public race for office, Mary Waters fought a private health battle http://www.freep.com/article/2 0090212/COL10/90212081/During+ a+public+race+for+office++Mary +Waters+fought+a+private+healt h+battle |

I seriously wouldn't be surprised if Karmanos did whisper Mary's little secret to Kwame during that dinner, and CCK was busting at the seams with it. They are just that foul. Confidentiality? Right. |

You folks make it sound as though her cancer is what hindered her and caused Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick to win the election... NOT SO!! What gave the election to CCK is that 2 prominent democrats ran against CCK in the Democratic primary, namely Mary Waters and Martha Scott. They divided the anti-CCK vote enough so that CCK got a plurality of the vote, and went on to win the general election against a sure-lose republican challenger in November. When it comes to the 2 Detroit congressional districts, it's the August primary that is the real election, the November vote outcome is already a given. All CCK has to do in 2 years to regain her seat is have another couple of good challengers split the anti-CCK vote again, and she'll be a shoe-in. |

Gistok, who said or implied that? If anything, I think the story and the comments speak to quite the opposite, that dealing with what she was dealing with, she was an even more capable and formidable candidate than even many of her supporters even knew she was. While I have empathy for Ms Waters health challenges and hope that she can overcome her cancer, I think her priorities are screwed up.Knowing she would need to have cancer treatments and knowing the stress of a campaign couldn't have help her health wise she still chose to run. She chose to run because she sensed a weakness in CCK because of her son not because of a lack of performance on CCK part. Waters lost because of the split vote of course but she also lost because CCK didn't give the voters of her district a reason to remove her other than the antics of her son. And she didn't give the voters a compelling reason to vote for her other than the Anybody but Kilpatrick vote. Ms Waters knew the situation with the split vote and could have dropped out if she really felt CCK was not capable. Also if she had won and as a result of her illness not be able to serve, then she did the voters a diservice. Not unlike President Obama when he ran against Bobby Rush for the House and got his hat handed to him, President Obama admitted he ran for the wrong reasons, I submit to you that Ms Waters did the same. |

Who financed Martha Scott? Any guesses? She couldn't even explain why she was running. Who benefitted from her being in the race and splitting the anti Momma vote? |

Both ladies saw an opening for a prized political seat. A seat that if you are moderately capable you can retire on. Both knew they were splitting the vote but an opening like that might not come again for a long time and they were going to take there shot. CCK took advantage of a terrible BRC tenure in the House to beat her but even that wasn't a cakewalk. Bottom line both ladies used the Kwame mess to take there best shot. The window of opportunity for both is most likely closed. |

quote:The window of opportunity for both is most likely closed. I don't know about that. That last election put a lot of blood in the water. Better politicians than Mary Waters have their eye on that seat, especailly after Jr.'s disgrace, CCK's tone death moves like bragging about paying for $13,500 private jet rides for her son after he gets out of jail in this economy and the coming federal indictments. It's game over if she's caught up in the indictments. A charismatic politician with a sterling reputation could knock off CCK easier than most think. |

Firstand ten: CCK didn't beat BRC, BRC didn't run again because the House Ethics Committee was after her for mis-using her office accounts. Sweet deal, eh? just go away and we won't prosecute you.....Kind of like Jim Holley paying back the money he feloniously converted and it will all just go away. No harm, no foul, right? Sheesh!!!!!!! |

Ct_alum CCK did beat BRC in the 1996 democratic primary. You might remember that the big controversy was who was the Black Slate going to endorse. I believe they endorsed BRC and yes the House ethics committee was seriously on BRC case. |

"Maybe so, but they better have a treasure chest full of cash." If they were going after her anytime before 2008, yes. But remember that Mary Waters came very close to pulling it out with no cash, minimal charisma and while fighting cancer. It wouldn't take a lot of money to take out CCK in 2010, especially if the federal indictments drag out or her son or someone else in the family screws up again. Not to mention she has created some powerful enemies who are licking their chops at the prospect of giving out some payback. The Dingells and Kim Worthy come to mind off the top of my head. The 2010 primary promises to be the toughest campaign yet for CCK. |

I partially agree with you E. If Kwame is still in the news this time next year then CCK is in trouble. Kwame's problems were almost enough to take Waters over the top last year. If things have died down as far as family issues are concerned by election time CCK will be hard to beat. |

The pending federal indictments could spell the end for CCK, even if she's not indicted. Those things always garner big headlines and are never resolved quickly. |
