Inspired by 9936sussex's post at my Maury's Bar thread, I thought I would see if I could get my hands on some Topor's. I thought the Merchant of Vino would have them but no deal.

I actually sought out the Topor's plant this afternoon and found it in the shadows of the MCS. It is a large, classic old brick industrial building. Their small delivery truck and a few vehicles were adjacent but all within a stockade-like fence. With that fence and the neighborhood (ugh), it didn't look like it was the type of place one would just wander in and inquire.--Jeff

Try the Meijers at 12 mile and Mound or 13 and Little Mack. They have them in the cooler by the lunch meats.

Gene, at our nearby Meijers I only looked on the room temperature shelf with all the other pickle brands. I didn't think to look in the coolers. I'll do that next trip.

All, thank you for your replies.

If you had the cajones to drive all the way to Topor's front door from wherever, you should/could have stepped out. We don't eat outsiders down here in the Corktown/Mexicantown area. Or you could have followed a delivery truck to a percieved safe area.:-)

Topor's pickles ( all the different varieties ) are always in the cooler , never on the shelves.

Homer, having practically lived at Tiger Stadium this summer the area doesn't scare me. It just looked like the plant wasn't shall I say set up for passers by?--Jeff

You can get them all the way out in Ann Arbor at the Arborland Hiller's. Seems possible other Hiller's might have them too. Always in the cooler.

Meijer at 12 and mound has them as well as produce palace on 12 and dequindre. Better yet are Topors yellow peppers which I cannot find since Honeybee quit carrying them. Those are a tougher find.any suggestions on those? Does the Topor factory have a store?

I don't think they can put cold-pack pickles on a shelf. I'm pretty sure only hot-packs can keep at room temp.

A friend of mine just started working for Topor's this week as a pickle-delivery-person. I talked to him yesterday. Hiller's Markets sells them, so he delivers cases and cases to Hiller's. And lots of delicatessens purchase them in big buckets or in bigger drums that weigh a ton.

Hiller's carries them (5 mile and Haggerty). They're in the refrigerated coolers by the cheese. Yum! I'm just finishing up a jar!

i never heard of them before this thread so when at meijer today i picked up a jar, quick question for those familiar, is the brine usually cloudy? they all looked the same, but compared to every other jar of pickles i've bought, its kind of strange

Yes, the brine is normally cloudy. The 'bits' will usually settle out after a while.

The other thing I've noticed about Topors is they do have a shelf life. If you keep them any longer than about a month, they start to go bad; I can't say if this is fermentation or what, but they start to get a real sharp zing. I don't know if this is typical of all cold-pack pickles, but eat 'em up quick.

Yes the cloudy brine is OK. I buy "Cucmbers in Brine" here in Hamtramck and they too are in a cloudy brine. Yum!!
