Here's a link to a new song by country artist John Rich (part of the duo Big & Rich). The song was apparently just recently written and is not yet released, but I've heard it on the local country stations. Surprisingly, I've also been told it's airing in other cities in the midwest.

The song is called "Shutting Detroit Down." Rich gives a brief introduction to the song, and the actual song begins about 2:30 into the clip.

Here's the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =GoIXxFSq7og&e

"While they're livin' it up on Wall Street in that New York City town, here in the real world, they're shutting Detroit down."

Thoughts on the song?

Not a Country Western fan, but love good music and meaningful messages.

That song is very true and piercing to the drama that is playing out in this nation.

Work has YouTube blocked unfortunately.
I find it refreshing that a C&W singer would actually sing something positive about the industry.
In this part of the country it's anything but. It's all about busting unions & blaming workers; I live in a red state, what can ya say!
Thanks for the link & I'll check it out when I get home.

I like.

Here's a homegrown one (mp3) from Stewart Francke called That's The Way We Do It In Detroit: http://www.stewartfrancke.com/ get/autotrade1.mp3

It's mentioned in today's Free Press in a column about a weeklong music marathon in aupport of the auto industry being planned for March - http://www.freep.com/article/2 0090128/COL03/901280311/1081/T his+is+the+way+we+do+it+in+Det roit

I haven't really listened to many country songs since I was a teenager, but I like this song. Very good song and I like what he's saying.

I hadn't listened to country in a while, either, until I got back into it a few months ago. I find that a lot of the songs are like this: easy, simple, clean, and with a message or a story.

It's poignant... although it does smack of classism, as many C&W songs do. Classism feeds the "us vs. them" monster.

However, Wall Street certainly wasn't held accountable for its bailout money like Detroit was.

I prefer "Motor City's Burning" ... both Hooker and MC5 versions.

How ironic that a "southern" named "Rich" sings about a "northern" city's problems. Perhaps "Rich" could hold a real "Big" concert for the local autoworkers who have just had their source of income switched from "Big" business over the the State?

BTW -- Where's Rob Richie at? This song makes about as much sense as his latest offer where he looks back in his Grand Ole Days in MICHIGAN listenin` to "Sweet Home Alabama". What a chump.

Sorry -- this Metro D-Towner doesn't need sympathy from a region that's tried to bury us recently. Detroiter's have a long memory regarding this type of pandering. We'll be just fine ... Rich, you're not needed. Take it some where else ...

B: Ditto to both Hooker and MC5.
Time for a new one. Menacing bass line. Maybe some mention that Wall Street's burning. Angry unemployed workers and pensioners "screaming it's unfair", followed by the refrain "let it all burn, let it all burn!"
Won't solve the problem, but might help let out some steam.
Where's brother J.C.?

"Menacing bass line"

-- Perhaps my new name? lol!

"Maybe some mention that Wall Street's burning. Angry unemployed workers and pensioners "screaming it's unfair", followed by the refrain "let it all burn, let it all burn!"

-- There is something to be said about Revolution. I'm all about frying a piece of Capitalist Pig Dog.

"Won't solve the problem, but might help let out some steam."

-- Why not? What the Hell else we doin`? ;) This is the type of stuff that leads to productivity.

"Where's brother J.C.?"

-- That's a good question. Last I heard he's still around. Not in D-Town ... but retired someplace.

Did anyone see Paula Tutman's report on this song and her comments on the channel 4 Friday morning news? It was very emotional, you could see it in her face. She made a powerful message with the report.

Rudy Giuliani's recent comments on the Wall Street bailouts were surreal and callous. Something to the effect of "Wall Street bonuses prevent job losses in NYC". Job losses??? Welcome to America, Rudy.

Memo to Rudy Giuliani
From: AP

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Banks collecting billions of dollars in federal bailout money sought government permission to bring thousands of foreign workers to the U.S. for high-paying jobs, according to an Associated Press review of visa applications.

The dozen banks receiving the biggest rescue packages, totaling more than $150 billion, requested visas for more than 21,800 foreign workers over the past six years for positions that included senior vice presidents, corporate lawyers, junior investment analysts and human resources specialists. The average annual salary for those jobs was $90,721, nearly twice the median income for all American households.

Just an awesome song. Not really much of a country western fan, but I do find that country music or folk music, etc. can really convey a strong message. I think this could really hit a nerve.

You know I think when things really get bad the glitzy politicians such as Romney and Giuliani end up looking like asses. I truly would love to Romney come to Michigan in 2012 as part of a presidential campaign. He is in for one chilly reception. I would like it if the artist would set aside some of the proceeds from this song to help those who have been hurt by this downturn.

I would enjoy seeing Romney raked over the coals in states like MI and OH if he were to run again. To be asked to explain his statements to people who are suffering from the depression in what remains of the US manufacturing sector.

Giuliani's comments may have just been dumb comments, poorly thought out statements. Although after the entire country offered enormous financial and moral support to NYC after the 9/11 attacks his statements do seem cruel.

However, Romney is just engaging in mean-spirited attacks against the Big 3, much like senators Shelby and Corker. Is it just a Republican tantrum or is it sabotage of the US blue collar population??

quote: "...is it sabotage of the US blue collar population??"
Duh, yes!
It was decided long ago that the blue collar workers were to have their standard of living reduced to subsistence levels of the past. The amazing thing is those workers were convinced to vote against their own vested interests by the Reagon, Bush, Hannity, Limbaugh crowd. Romney is trying to continue the trend, using the same old formula:
Tax cuts and derugulation for the wealthy = prosperity for all.
The right side of the formula is now proving false, but the mission of sabotaging blue collar workers has been accomplished.
