http://tinyurl.com/5za5od I assume they were apartments. The Google Streetview shows the buildings deteriorating and the streets blocked off by fences. http://tinyurl.com/6y2r43 Live Maps, taken probably in 2005 or 2006 shows at least some of the buildings occupied. Whoever owns the building may have just gone bankrupt, but I have to ask, is that what happened here? Why were they lived in 3 years ago and empty now? Is there more to this story? Thanks. |

That was the Jeffries East housing project, not a privately-owned apartment complex. Here is an HUD press release about it. I don't know the status of the redevelopment project, I haven't really been following it. |

They have been torn down. I believe the plan is to build a development similar to Woodbridge Estates. I hope that they go more for the "townhouse" style then the "single-family home" and I definitely hope they bring back the original street grid. |

It was sort of a swath of real estate left after they carved in the expressway. I agree: Let's hope they restore the street grid. It would be nice to see Charlotte and Peterboro go through. (Then again, if they're going to do it up like Woodbridge Estates, look forward to faux historical street names, energy-wasting homes and huge, water-sucking lawns. |

Do any of these HUD housing Projects ever last? It seems to me a vicious cycle: Give people a home, which fosters dependency, which decreases the desire to provide for oneself, which requires more public housing. Wouldn't a better approach be to provide an incentive for private builders to come in and build homes, and give those who want to live there a tax incentive? |

Yeah, except all the rules (zoning, codes, parking requirements, etc.) for private builders produce homes that suck up resources, lower density and whose target buyer wouldn't want to buy there in the first place. |

Retroit, my parents started out with good ol' HUD. It was so bad... the goal and plan was to get out of their as soon as possible (ASAP). That is exactly what they did. Giving them a home fostered the potential for growth, and I would not be here if it was not for HUD (in part). Although, maybe we were the minority? The main reason they wanted to leave was the attitudes of the neighbors. Still, the goal is to create the doors. It definitely seems true that many will never notice the doors, and most will never choose to go through them. I subscribe to the idea that everyone needs to go back for two others (all that pay it forward carp). |

I have sympathy for those who are unable to provide for themselves due to mental/physical disabilities, but the whole Welfare Mentality enrages me. A few weeks ago, I stood in line behind a woman at the grocery store. She had 4 children with her and was pregnant with a 5th and she is paying for her groceries with a Bridge Card (Food Stamp debit card)!!! I felt like saying "Bitch, will you please learn to cross your legs and say 'no', I'm getting tired of working my ass off to feed YOUR family!" |

I read somewhere that the Red Wings were interested in building a new arena there because of it's proximity to MotorCity Casino. |
