In July and August 1997 the Zeitgeist put on its first play, Jean Paul Sartre's NO EXIT. The next month, it had its first art exhibit. Since then, they've sponsored many plays and nearly 80 art exhibits. During the run of the final exhibit, they learned that they had to close. Parts of that exhibit are still on display. There's a "political show" THE LAST DAYS OF 1984 and an exhibit marking the 1o year anniversary of the demolition of the Detroit Hudson's Building. The closing party last week was well attended and included a rant by Eric Mesko, a puppet show, the Don't Look Now Jug Band and the Space Band. Tonight is the final event ever at this space. Door open at 7pm and there will be an art auction at 8pm. This includes artifacts, solo work and collaborative art works. http://www.metrotimes.com/arts /story.asp?id=13427 http://www.zeitgeistdetroit.or g/ |

I can barely express how sad I am about the closing of the Zeitgeist. A bright shining and welcoming spot along Michigan Avenue, and certainly, throughout the whole metro area. It's impact will sink in over time. Regardless, the whole metro community is much the poorer for the Zeitgeist's demise. (Message edited by 1KielsonDrive on November 15, 2008) |

"whole metro community is much the poorer for the Zeitgeist's demise." That pretty much sums it up |

Having never stepped inside the place, but having driven by it plenty of times I will miss it. Wonder how long before "IT DON,T EXIST" shows up on the building? |

If they knew how to make a decent Coney dog they might still be in business. |

Abreact Theatre is still going strong. Currently their new performance space is the Gryphon Theatre above the Park Bark at Park and Elizabeth. For more info, check out their website at http://www.theabreact.com/ |

The two concluding events at the Zeitgeist went well. The November 8 party was a gas! Many of the mainstays & old friends made appearences. The auction also went well. They made enough money to pay most of the current bills and maybe keep the website up "in memorium." As is too often the case, support from the audience-at-large, art community, media & art collectors was often minimal. This contributed to their demise. Yet, the fact that they has SOME support, at least, kept it going for over eleven years. The auction was quite funny/humorous, often lapsing into quips and slapstick amidst the sadness. The Zeitgeist died as it lived! http://www.zeitgeistdetroit.or g/ |

The Zeitgeist, loveable and dear as it was, never achieved being a commercially viable business. The bar was unlicensed, the shows were not well promoted and theatre performances ceased for a year or two, never to draw crowds again. If not for the efforts of Jimbo, Dianna, Maurice and a few others, the place wouldn't have lasted as long as it did. It's a shame - a true community center and the heart of Detroit was torn out. |
