Preservation Wayne 2008 Preservation Honor Awards Winners Restoration, Renovation, Rehabilitation The Detroit Athletic Club and their restorative artists for the their ongoing stewardship of the exterior and interior of this iconic Albert Kahn Building. The Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Film Theater for their commitment to the rehabilitation of the theater space to maintain its historic integrity and enhance the patron experience. The Speedometer Building and Wayne State Police Department for the renovation of this early auto industry structure to further its life and usefulness as a headquarters for the Wayne State University Security staff and operations. Lifetime Achievement Ruth Adler Schnee – architectural and textile designer, business owner, lecturer, scholar Joe Zainea – and his family stayed in the city of Detroit as owners and managers of The Majestic Theater and Garden Bowl since 1946. Community Development Ryan and Phil Cooley – for the renovation of the building which now houses Slow’s BBQ as well as the Michigan Ave Commercial Block. New Center Council – Woodward Gateway Façade Improvement Project for the implementation of a façade matching grant that restored or rehabilitated the facades of twenty-eight (28) buildings in the block between Grand Boulevard and Baltimore on Woodward Avenue. (Including the Detroit Hardware Co façade). Education Roddy Rivers of the A. Philip Randolph Career and Technical Center for his dedication to Historic Preservation Education at the Randolph School’s Preservation Field Study: Building Arts Lab which took place at Historic Fort Wayne. Daniel Baxter for his dedication to Landmark History. Baxter nominated his childhood home (the Ossian Sweet Home) to the local, state, and national historic registers and continues to share his knowledge with students and adults. The Indian Village Home Tour Program for opening their neighborhood and homes for the enrichment of public knowledge and of neighborhood architectural history. Friends of the Book Cadillac for several years of education through preservation advocacy. Pioneer Sean Harrington for his work restoring Park Avenue with the Town Pump and Iodent Toothpaste Buildings. The upper floors to be used for apartment space, the lower housing a Conde-Nast recognized Martini Bar (Centaur). Government Leadership George Jackson and the DECG for the Book-Cadillac, the Lower Woodward Façade Improvement Program, and the revitalization of Washington Blvd. Regional Neighbor Award Grosse Pointe Academy for the restoration of the Grosse Pointe Academy, Main School Building (formerly the Moran School Building). Milford Historical Society for the restoration of the Pettibone Creek Hydroelectric Station.
