I need your help to settle a debate that my girlfriend and I are having. Which is better, American or Lafayette Coney Island? I say Lafayette, she claims American. |

See that link to the left that says "Search Site"? USE IT. If you really want to know which place is better, though, maybe you should go eat at both of them. I wouldn't sound so pissy if this weren't the fifteen THOUSANDTH thread on this stupid either/or question. |

For the record, we have tried both places and cannot agree on a winner. That's why I posed the question on this web site. I appreciate your insight and have learned my lesson. Next time I will carefully search all 5179 of your posts before asking a question. (Message edited by littlem on November 07, 2008) |

Littlem, Welcome to DYes. Sorry you have hit a nerve with just your 2nd post, But looking at Danindc's 5179 post's wont tell you much about Coney's? But some of the many post's about American or Lafayette will lead you to a very conclusive answer! >>> DULY'S <<< glad to help |

I never posted an opinion on any of those 15,000 other coney island threads that Danindc mentioned, so FWIW, I'm partial to Lafayette. |

This is a common, narrow debate among weekend Detroiters. Real city folk know the best coney island in the city is Duly's! |

Every time I've gone to either place, their hot dogs were like Meat spread, encased in a boot-leather skin. So I'm gonna have to go ahead and say neither. |

Lafayette is the best. American is an indoor bus stop and crackhead hangout. |

American is a nice place to bring the kids after skating at Campus Martius, but Lafayette is better after a bad date, or a night out with other adults. If for no other reason, they serve beer, and American doesn't. So, it's a tie. |

I have to agree with Detx Duly's is by far the best Coney in town. American and Lafayette are for the suburbanites who don't know about the glory of Duly's. Hands down the best in food, atmosphere and service. The afternoon shift older guy (Joe?) even played his Albanian guitar for us. Go in at night with Manny and Wally, two good guys. |

Check the search function. It sucks but because this has been covered a million times you should have no problem. Besides the chili comes from the same place. |

Dulys sucks, they boil skinless hotdogs. How can that be considered a coney? You might as well rip open a pack of Oscar Mayers and open a can of Hormel Chili. Lafayette 2 on 1 heavy Orange pop. |

Not again.... "Tell her it's time to start seeing other people." HAHA. - Tell your girlfriend yours is the best. But after many dogs at both, Lafayette has the better chili sauce, I think Americans sauce is a little runnier. (and their buns are fresher) NOW IF, Lafayette were to add ..... THEN, they would be hands down the World's best coney in my mind. |

I can't stand that I don't know how to navigate around. What did I do wrong? Should I have found all the other Coney threads? |

It's pretty much a tie on the food, both serve good dogs with that satisfying snap. Gotta love that. Sauce, err, in either case is a Detroit thing. For me it comes down to the respective Floor Shows. The Lafayette wait staff is second to none in the milk pour, the fork and toothpick balance and the balancing nails trick. You can get beer at the Lafayette, but florescent lights and beer don't mix. During the day, watching the street activity through the window is better at the American, the bathrooms are more civilized but the decor is pure BurgerChef redux. If this is a boy/girl question ... I bet if you ask the real reason the girlfriend prefers the American is because of the restrooms at the Lafayette. |

I'll take two dogs and crispy fries from Dulys. Then on my way out I'll take an order of rye toast to go. The best entertainment I've observed at a CI was a few years ago at American when one of the waiters was chasing the bus boy around the restaurant and threatening to kill him with a fork. The bus boy was a young kid who seemed like a smart ass, but the waiter seemed a little nutty. It was a bad mix. |

threadjack: my aunt once remarked, "did you ever notice how fried egg sandwiches are always better in a restaurant, than what you can make at home?" we all chuckled. first of all, i didn't know restaurants really offered them - and if they did, i can't imagine ordering one. but i think what was in her mind was being raised in the depression era, and having to make so many fried egg sandwiches. it was probably nice that someone else was making it. then again, maybe you'd never want to see one ever again, after living off them for years. who knows. |

Why do you care if it's been asked a million times? Most of the questions on this site have been asked multiple times over the past several years of it's existence. Their are new people all the time, let them have their fun. You don't have to read or post a reply to every post like this. If your not interested, do what everyone else does and move on to another conversation. No? Littlem, welcome! Good post. Things have just been slow around here lately, and there's some people who are just having some bad days (and they are looking for a place to vent without recourse, just like it always happens). |

Exactly I remember my first post here so many years ago was a question that had been asked a tome of times already at that time and I have seen asked a ton of times since. "Whats that castle looking building on Grand River near the Michigan Theater?" Questions will be asked over and over thats what happens on forums as new people come into the fray. If it annoys you don't read a thread entitled with something you know has been discussed. |

Regarding Duly's...... I've been eating there for a lot of years , they only recently ( last couple of years ) started offering french fries , then I come in one day and they're serving up a plate of onion rings to somebody . I almost had a stroke, couldn't believe it. Got to change with the times I guess . Also , when you order an omelet at Duly's , why the hell do they serve it with a salad with french dressing on the same plate? I've never asked , but I do need an explanation on that one. |

Retroit, I switch it up. Also, I didn't know the official name of this site was DetroitYES of whatever for a while. Before I bookmarked this forum, I would go to Google and put in Discuss Detroit. What comes up is a blue screen with five boards and no side links, pages or banners. So I can believe that others didn't know there was a search function. |

Really Kenp? I am sure they have been disappointed how the franchise had been run into the ground. Are there even Angelo's open outside the Davison Rd. location anymore? That is awesome news. Davison Rd. even though it has become a very rough neighborhood still has Flint's staple restaurants Angelo's, Luigi El Torro's, and of course John's Pizzeria and Italian Restaurant. |

Hopefully everyone else will enjoy this as much as we did at the time. Some members of my family and I headed into the city to finally check out MGM. A family friend was also in the group. She's lived in the area her whole life, but she's not one to venture downtown and she's never been to either Lafayette or American. She's also a bit spoiled and I guess the best way to put it, snooty. Stopped into Lafayette for a late dinner before returning to the great suburban outback. First, she asks for a menu. Well, ok, we'll give her that one. After a funny look, our waiter made a great show of searching around and blowing dust off the one he found. Next, she asked for a lemon for her water. No, not kidding. When the food arrived, she took one bite into her coney and promptly spit it out, screaming, "There's a casing on this! I'm eating guts!!" It was all just too much. I didn't think it was possible to laugh onions out ones nose, but I'm pretty sure I did. haha |
