Just more proof that media likes to make the city look bad(as if we don't do a good enough job on our own)Philly fans can over turn cars, set fires, but there's not one damn word from the media. If this had happened in Detroit CNN, ESPN, etc would replaying the footage every second they had and I'm willing to bet that the late comics who mention the word riot if Detroit gets even close to winning a championship won't mention it.

It is unfortunate that this happens when sports teams win a title. Puts a cloud over the victory. I do not know what the fans think. Not my kind of celebration.

I agree completely, Eric.

The media forms our opinions in so many ways.

Hence, why I've turned off mainstream media for the most part, except NPR/WDET (which is still mainstream, but takes the time to talk about entire stories).

State College got a little carried away when Penn State beat Ohio State last Saturday, too.

The DJ on "The 1960's" channel on XM just noticed.

He claimed to have an e-mail from a listener asking about tomorrow's parade in Philadelphis - "will they have the mess from last night's 'disturbance' cleaned up in time to hold the Philly's parade?
Signed, the 1984 Detroit Tiger Fans"

Holy sh!t, I didn't hear about this either! This would be in the headlines across the country if it happened in Detroit. Hell, I think it even makes headlines when Detroit doesn't burn or riot after winning a championship!

How ironic, Philadelphia and '76 go together like American pie and baseball! :-)

C'mon, whiners: The last time the national media "noticed" Detroit's sports' celebrations was almost 20 years ago, when several people died in the aftermath of the Pistons' championship. (Some victims were revelers killed by a car on Van Dyke; one guy fell off of a roof near WSU.) Why are we upset? I don't get it.

^ Who's upset? Surprised? Yes. Upset? No, not me. Detroit fully earned it's lousy reputation.

I have to think that if there weren't a presidential election on Tuesday, we would definitely be hearing more about this in the national media.

sorry, there was an election in 1984 too.

after each of the 7 championships in detroit since, I have seen major news organizations express surprise that there was no violence, and they ALWAYS bring up 1984. there have been sports related riots since in several places. none gets the amount of coverage 1984 has had

The 1967 riots got the nation's attention on Detroit. We had it during the '43 riot too.
I don't think Philly can match that.

The 1984 World Series ended on October 14. Election Day 1984 was November 6. That's three full weeks, and you had an incumbent candidate who won 49 states, and 68% of voters who thought things in the country were going either "fairly well" or "very well"--a far different scenario than what we currently face.

Please stop the Detroit pity parties. Please. Just stop. It's not good for self-esteem.
