The Today show will broadcast from Detroit on Thursday, 09/25. It was mentioned on the show this morning. Not sure of the extent, if they'll be based in Detroit, or just a segment. Also found this about it in the Freep: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs .dll/article?AID=/20080922/NEW S01/80922042&s=d&page=2#pluckc omments |

Part of the crew will be broadcasting from Detroit, and the others will be at the studio in New York. The Today Show has been broadcasting from different battleground states this week. Monday they were in Philadelphia, today they were in Tampa, tomorrow Virginia and Thursday Detroit. |

Umm that was a joke. I don't know anything about the personal lives of these talking heads, nor do I care to. I just figured one way not to get on TV is to be waving a sign like that! |

Isn't the show generally over by 9am? Maybe why that webcam shot looks sparce. From the looks of the show on TV, there was a fairly good turn out this morning. I couldn't hang around and watch, had to get to work; did they do a piece on Detroit or MI? |

There were several hundred people at Campus Martius this morning for the Today Show thing. It may not have been Bryant Park-level activity, but things were pretty lively. Au Bon Pain sold a lot of coffee. |

Al Roker said Detroit was the largest crowd they have had since they went on the road. |

Were people really expecting a huge turnout? On a good day, only 80,000 people fill the CBD, and they all had to work. |

I missed the first 10 minutes of the show. Is that when they played Ken Cockrel Jr.'s pre-recorded piece? |

Ya think maybe the reason they had the "largest" crowd is that so many people in Michigan are out of work... |

^That area is amazingly empty for 8am on a weekday morning. But you couldn't tell that if you were a viewer. There were some great shots of the surrounding buildings from the ground perspective. |

How is it "amazing"? How many people would have been satisfactory for you? 1 million? 10 trillion? |

quote:How is it "amazing"? How many people would have been satisfactory for you? 1 million? 10 trillion? Amazingly. As in nobody is there. As in that is the central business district in one of America's largest cities -- during the morning rush hour -- and if it weren't for the Today Show the streets would be completely empty. As in, that should probably be alarming to look at... |

Iheartthed, come on now, you should know the answer to that one. -There are no storefront shops or offices -People drive their car right to the entrance of their building (surface lots with street parking on Griswold). -Detroit's main employment base is in Oakland County. |

That said, Campus Martius did look beautiful. I'm not asking for a 1-year turnaround. I would be happy to see gradual improvement over the next 10 years, both in the employment numbers, reduction in crime, property valuations and general quality of life in both the CBD and the neighborhoods. It's easy to underestimate what you can do in 10 years...and if your starting point is $1 for 1,000 square foot house, odds are on Detroit's side. |

No traffic because they shut down the roundabout to vehicles. On an average day the area would be packed with cars. |

Detroitrise...thanks for the scoop. Al Roker: "a joke & a racist"; perhaps this indictment is in reference to the big guy's on-air remarks, made during a June, 2007 TODAY broadcast? |
