quote:Hipsters are the new yuppies. Both hated on at different times by 'true' urban dwellers for the same reasons. Yeah, as a yuppie, I struggle to understand what those reasons are. Can someone enlighten me? The City of Detroit is unfriendly to outsiders in its bureaucracy, its politics, its street signage, even to its future business owners, residents, and developers. It's almost as if it's ingrained into the culture. I lived in the city. I'm moving back into the city. I dunno what the hell MOCAD or SMART actually stand for. I mean, I'll take the trouble to look it up and all. But I'm challenging people to see that the status quo needs a little shake up. How about, Detroit: Welcoming Outsiders With Its Arms Wide Open. Kinda goes back to something I said in another thread...."Detroit: Where Beggars Can Be Choosy" |

Sorry to tell you, but there will probably be more and more hipsters with their acronyms moving into the city soon. Students are no longer taught paragraph structure, syntax, spelling, etc. Look at what one famous former teacher recently said, in public: "You done set me up for a comeback". Also, text messaging has led to the further eroding of the English language. Now, allow me to check and distribute my carbon copies of this contribution, so that more readers can be informed. |

I don't mind shortening things a little. Bohemian National Home (8 syllables) to BoHo (2) is fair enough. But I draw the line at calling North Corktown "NoCo". C'mon, people! We don't have the TIME to say North Corktown? Or what's with trying to call the north end of Hamtramck "NoHam"? That doesn't even have zip! (Sounds like some boring Middle Earth name. The Sword of Noham!) Must we give these fucking neighborhoods cutesy little names? Shit. Call them all the precious abbreviated monikers you want; that won't make it SoHo, you fools! |

There was pager code? People used to actually talk on those things? Wow! Thanks for making me feel young. I am a post pager generation... I think (or was just behind). I did have a HUGE Motorola cell phone though. It had no battery life, and was the size of a brick. I remember when everyone thought it was just hilarious to call you, saying they were coming over. Then it would turn out they were calling from your front porch. "Ahh.. haha.. you got me". All the time you would just be bothered by the bizarre pop-over. Plus, it was only even possibly funny the first time it was done to you. It's all so fun to be a part of something like that though. I wonder what silly little pranks people did with the first cars, or television, or radio, or telephone. I wonder who made the first prank phone call. Oh, and you just know tons of people who were the first to own a freezer, saved some snowballs to throw at the neighbors in the Summer. |

quote:Will people stop with the whole "midtown is the cass corridor" shit. The cass corridor is part of midtown. midtown is a combination of several neighborhoods Cass corridor, Brush Park, New Center, and I think Milwaukee Junction. Sorry Gumby, but you're including too wide of an area into Midtown... surprised no one else caught this... The Midtown "label" consists of 6 distinct districts.... Cass Park (formerly "Corridor"), Wayne State, Cultural Center (they also use a new name "Museum District"), Detroit Medical Center (DMC), Brush Park, and Orchestra Place. Midtown's boundaries are the 4 freeways... Lodge, Ford, Chrysler, Fisher. New Center is entirely north of I94, and IIRC it also includes Milwaukee Junction and even though it's across the Lodge Freeway... Henry Ford Hospital. |

Gumby, the problem is, people made a concerted effort 10 years ago or so to start calling the Cass Corridor "Midtown." It was very contrived, which is why I refuse to use the word "Midtown" -- it was dreamed up in an office somewhere. They did the same thing Downriver, where the Chamber of Commerce types tried to change "Downriver" to "Metro Shores." The Corridor is the Corridor. And Downriver is Downriver. |

quote:It was very contrived, which is why I refuse to use the word "Midtown" -- it was dreamed up in an office somewhere I respectfully disagree. Changing the name can help change the perception, culture, and even the identity and social norms of the area. I mean, to get biblical...Saul to Paul, for example. As someone who wants to see continued revival, it's a lot easier to sell people on living in "Midtown" than the Cass Corridor. Of course, I can see it being hard to agree if: (1) You are happy with Cass Corridor looking the way it did in 1990 (2) You are happy with Cass Corridor attracting the same kinds of people it did to get its bad reputation. Putting lipstick on a pig is not a solution, but if there's one thing Detroit is way behind the curve on, it's marketing and sex appeal. I swear, there's like this sentiment that unless it's gritty and dirty, it's not really "Detroit". Well, hell, I thought we were tired of gritty and dirty... |

Detroitnerd, back to business: While pwning n00b CHUB's under the I-75 overpass with your mystical motown machete, you are attacked by a grizzly bear sized retro rat riding a fixie, wearing clothes from salvation army, and drunk with power after drinking fortified PBR at the majik stick while watching a mediocore garage rock band with their thumbnails painted black. The retro rat steals your wallet, iPhone, and bridge card. Do you A) Follow the Rat to its mystical dumpster hideout B) Continue Up I-75 towards the incinerator of 1000 garbage fires C) Go up the off ramp to a gas station to cash a check and get your pager activated. |
