The bastard came back!

Copper thief returns to St. Albertus and is caught!

At approximately 6am today (Fri.) the Detroit police apprehended a man attempting to steal copper from he roof of St. Albertus. While the thief did not get away with any of the copper, he did cause more damage to the roof that will have to be fixed. Also, because the window that he entered through the first time had been secured he broke out a small stained glass window to gain entry to the Church (2'x3'). This all comes days before security system upgrades planned by PAHSA were to be made. It appears that the man the police caught is most likely the same one who committed the first offense. While it is a somewhat satisfying to know that he is no longer on the streets, the damage is done, once again, and that is something jail time won't fix. However, PAHSA will be pressing charges.

Great news! Is there any insurance that can help pay a portion of the cost? I doubt this criminal has any assets you can tap.

Follow the chain upward to the yard that bought the stolen goods....Fortify your property...Wait for the next one.

{While it is a somewhat satisfying to know that he is no longer on the streets,}

Unfortunately due to lax laws regarding scrapping and lax courts in the city he is probably back on the streets doing the same thing.

Too bad the cops didn't just throw him off the roof as opposed to arresting him.

I recently received this propaganda from my state senator:

Thefts of copper and other valuable metals will drastically be reduced under legislation recently passed by the Michigan Senate.

Senate Bill 1358 would create the Nonferrous Metal Regulatory Act to establish requirements for dealers and sellers of valuable metals and prescribe penalties for violations. Sellers must present the dealer with a picture ID, allow the dealer to make a photocopy of it and also allow the dealer to make a thumb-print for identification and investigation purposes.
Under the legislation dealers must: Create an accurate, legible record of each purchase transaction and retain the database for at least a year; Register with or subscribe to an Internet-based database available to dealers, law enforcement agencies and the general public that lists and tracks thefts of nonferrous metal and articles containing nonferrous metals; and Pay a seller by check, electronic transfer, ATM card or bar code, or other method capable of being traced from the dealer to the seller.
Buying or selling nonferrous metal articles, knowing they were stolen, would be a felony punishable by up to five years imprisonment and/or a maximum fine of $5,000.

SB 1114 provides penalties for stealing copper and other metals. Penalties would be assessed based on the value of the property stolen. This includes the replacement cost of the stolen metal, the cost of repairing the damage caused by the theft, or the sum of both of these amounts.

The bills now head to the House of Representatives for consideration.

I agree that the authorities must go after the dealers but do you know what the punishment is for the scrappers themselves?

I'm glad they caught the son-of-a-bitch but copper anywhere in the city has a limited life span. We have reached critical mass in the theft of copper and without drastic measures the tide will be hard to roll back. As a matter of fact the police and city (mo)/(fa)thers have lost control of the situation and thefts are spinning completely out of control.

Keep your eyes on the newest precious metal thefts of catalytic converters which is an epidemic across the country because the price of platinum, one of the metals in the converter, has skyrocketed. Thieves can get $40 to $50 for a converter from an unscrupulous scrap metal dealer. Toyota 4Runners are particular targets -- not only do their catalytic converters contain plenty of platinum, their high ground clearance makes them particularly easy targets. A thief with a socket wrench can remove a 4Runner's converter in minutes.

I'd like to find out where the scrapper lives and then remove his plumbing. :-)

In St. Louis they caught a brick thief and he's being charged with stealing of property worth less than $5000 (a misdemeanor) and criminal damage to property (a felony).

I don't know what Michigan's laws are, though. And copper may be a different law.

Exchange the stolen copper that the scrapper is in possession of for a few rounds of lead from a Glock 9.

Fishtoes2000, attend what, where? It's already been shown unless it's being shown, again. And, if it is there are no particulars at your link.

what happened to the scrapper? hopefully still sitting in jail or already out on the streets?? (in which case, a re-arrest warrant should already be ready to go)
