Rats Invade Neighborhood, Cause Problems

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. -- Residents in a southwest Birmingham neighborhood say rats are invading their homes.

Gloria Fortner said she first noticed rats in her back yard a few years ago, and lately there have been several sightings. She said, "They are about the size of a squirrel, just not as cute." Rat burrows were found in her backyard.

Workers at a neighborhood hardware store in Birmingham say that in the last month about 25 people have come in buying rat poison.

Building officials say they have taken several calls on code enforcement, and they visited some homes. They say construction and water mains being built have caused rats to come out, and bird seed in people's back yards attracts them.

Building official Bruce Johnson says the most recent sighting was at a foreclosed home.

Neighbors say they think the city is trying to take care of the situation.

Residents can call the city for more information on how to get rid of the pesky rodents.

The Ferndale area also dealt with an increase of rats after sewer lines were opened up for construction on Stratford Road, but now Animal Control says all has been quiet since they were closed.

*Sigh*

Here we go again...

Maybe if people keep their properties clean then rats wouldn't be a problem. Rats only come when/where they're welcome (a trash infested area).

Simple as that!

I guess those maids aren't getting the job done.

The rats I have seen in Grosse Pointe Farms are around vacant properties with yards that have gotten out of control. Example: our next door neighbor's house has been empty for over a year and if it weren't for a few of us taking care of the lawn, bushes, etc and me letting the cat out to prowl around their backyard and scare the little creatures away we would definitely have a real rat problem. I don't know why they originally showed up (obviously there was no trash for them to eat), but they seem to have moved on to greener, overgrown pastures.
