Does anyone remember Checker Barbeque on Livernois south of 8 Mile Rd. on the east side of the street? They had the best BarBarbeque ribs and chicken. And, if you had exotic tastes you could go across the street to Dot 'n Etta's Shrimp Shack.

Wonderful ribs. I remember liking the cole slaw, too. The only comfortably integrated restaurant I can remember going to in the sixties.

Where was that compared to Rudy's Chicken Lips?

I'm not making that up, in case any of you think I am.

I miss Checker.
But not as much as I miss "Jean's Sauce of the Islands" at Brother's BBQ, Wyoming and Curtiss.
More of a red sauce.

God! I can still taste that wonderful sauce. They used to throw in an extra bone or two for me. They had two locations. One downtown and one by Mumford High. I used to like Park Barbeque as well, but their sauce had more of a chalky taste.

At Checker BBQ the waitress would bring you a wet, steaming hot, folded towel to clean your hands.

I forgot about that civility, Neilr. In addition they had the best hamburgers ever. When my wife was pregnant with our first I would have to out all the time to bring something back from Checker Barbeque to satisfying her cravings. She also had a taste for Top Hat Hamburgers on was it 8 Mile and Livernois?

For us working as stock clerks at a supermarket ((K-Mart Foods)at Outer Drive and Sherwood and going to.... midnight bowling at Mound Lanes....THAT Checker at 8 & Livernois was "slabfastic". The diversity, atmosphere and Baby Backs made up for all the 120 bowling lines.

Yes, I remember Checker from when I worked at Packer Pontiac in '71 and '72.
We used to get carry outs on our late nights, Mondays until 9 P.M. Made late nights almost bearable. Then after that , off to the Robin Hood for a beer or three.....................

I remember my dad taking me to get ribs to go at a black owned rib place that I think was on Livernois. What I remember besides, they were great, was that they were wrapped in layers of newspaper. Would anyone remember going there in the 50's? How about the name of the place?

Checker BBQ was a treat. There was another great BBQ place on Woodward and Baltimore, the Tasty BBQ. Super ribs, and steamed buns to die for. They closed about 1984.

I got food poisoning at Tasty's about 1983-84. I had to give it up after that.
