I suppose local would depend on where an individual lives, or are you asking specifically about Detroit local government?

Yeah, Chuck, the City of Henderson is absolutely superb in their management. Low taxes, good services, and even a substantial "rainy-day fund" for the future should things turn sour. It's a complete opposite from good ol' Detroit.

Fed 20%
State 50%
City of Southfield 90%

I've lived in a few cities from here to Washington State and I can honestly say that the services and the City of Southfields involvement in the community are second to none.

While I have no doubt that Henderson is run very efficiently it is a little unfair to compare the two given age, infrastrcuture, social issues, etc.

The irony that Detroit (with all of its poverty and budget issues) is paying your pension as you spend your money in Henderson. I am not questioning whether your pension was earned but let's compare apples to apples.

BD - What are your thoughts about your Mayor if she were to win the election as county exec. Seems everyone speaks highly of her but i know very little about her.

Negative - 110 % is way less than Zero percent.

I would rather DPD or DFD get their pension that is due than pay some salaries in the City Law Dept. or the $ 9,000,000. in Hizhonor's law suit.

Poor all around.

Feds: 30
Michigan: 15
Detroit: 15 (but it could be at least 50 without scandals everywhere and the bickering that slows all the processes down).

I used the question of "what percentage of them am I happy meeting" as the thought exercise. Not ranking how good a job they are doing, just our level of satisfaction, remember!

I'm surprised at some of the higher approval of the feds.

Seen the budget lately?

Notice how social security hasn't been changed yet, and will go bankrupt soon? Notice the expansions of medicare under a "conservative" president?

Well, rate them highly while you can, because you won't be when taxes double so that we can pay for all the old people in 10-20 years.

Mackinaw, I didn't base my rating on recent affairs, but how far the Federal government has brought this country from 300 years ago.

However, due to recent affairs, I did give the feds a 70 instead of a 100.

Jt, in no way was I comparing the two. The question was to rate those three forms of government where you are living. I agree, there is no way to compare the two. I wouldn't begin to try.

Scs100,

Detroit does a pretty good job of plowing downtown sidewalks. I walk from Harmonie Park to Greektown every day, and most of the sidewalks along my morning walk are cleared by 9am after an overnight snowfall.
---------

Detroit-bashing has become a cherished tradition in this region, and it clouds every topic and discussion...

I grew up in the shithole suburb of Shelby Township, and moved to downtown Detroit as soon as I could.

The city services in downtown Detroit are vastly superior to anything seen in Shelby Township, and most other suburbs.

In Shelby Township, they don't plow the sidewalks, because they don't even HAVE sidewalks. After a big snowstorm, we would wait days for a county plow truck to come down our street.

We didn't even have streetlights until I was out of grade school, and even then they were few and far between. I have more working streetlights within one block of my Detroit home than I had in one square mile of my childhood suburban home.

Erik,

Of course you did have sidewalks, let alone streetlights. It's a TOWNSHIP. There is no city planning in a township. you probably notice that they just threw schitt up haphazardly: "Let's build a strip mall here; a subdivision here and cement factory here" etc.

Whatever ruling body governs a township doesn;t care about city planning, thy just wann put stuff on the land and increase property value.

Comparing a city to a township is like comparing an apple to a rock. It's just not a fair assessment.

Erikd, I was referring to the entire city, not just downtown. I have no doubt that Detroit does a good job downtown, but they certainly don't do a good job of snow removal throughout the rest of the city.

City (Ferndale); 90%
Regional (Oakland county):10% -They are clueless and to the times we are in. But this would apply to all except our city.

State: 20%

Federal:10% I can't remember a time when our Federal government was this bad.

Scs100....Agreed; and we're not just talking about recent history.
It's been travel at your own risk, following a snowstorm, in the neighborhoods of Detroit....for several decades.
