The plant was on the west side of Conant just south of Davison. It was very close to the library. The aroma from the plant was pretty good. You could walk in the front door and get a fresh bag of chips, chips still warm and the bag wasn't sealed. The chips were fantastic, the price of the bag of chips was $.10, three cents more than the local newspaper.

Yes, it was on Conant right across from Jayne Field. They had the best potato chips hot out of the oven that would come out of or drop down onto a conveyer belt where the chips would move along and fill bags. You are also right that they were $.10 a bag, $.03 more than a local newspaper. One of the places where Gold Chips were sold was the Conant Show, one of the few if only show that sold potato chips as well as popcorn. Gold Chips was on the Detroit side of Carpenter St. but the Conant Show was on the Hamtramck side of Carpenter St. and the west side of Conant St., also. Here's a photo of the Conant Show. I was wondering if anyone remembers what streets the Conant Show was in between or what the address was? And, since I'm wondering and wishing does anyone out there have any photos of the inside or outside of Gold Chips? I've looked but I can't find any.

Mortalman; I think it was between Caely and Commor. Caely came in from the east and ended at Conant. The city limits for Hamtramck may have been the alley at the rear of the show. I know there was a confectionery store a couple of doors north of the show. Back in the 50's and 60's there was a restaurant very close to the show. The name may have been the Wishing Well Drive-In. As I recall the gas station across the street was a Shell station. I don't recall the marquis as it is in the image. My mom went to the show when they gave dishes with an admission. I don't have any photos of the Gold Chips factory. Hope this helps.

Stinger4me, here's a photo that shows the candy store you were talking about. Its right next door on the south side of the Conant Show but I don't know the name of the candy store. I don't remember the restaurant Wishing Well Drive-In you mentioned but there was a drive-in restaurant on the west side on the corner of Comstock and Conant called Mazur's Drive-In and I believe it was the 1st and only drive-in restaurant in Hamtramck.

The confectionery store I was recalling was north of the show but a couple of doors. It is probably just before the billboards in the imagery. Maybethe place in the image was closed by the time we visited the show. I don't think the Wishing Well Drive-In lasted very long. Mazur's Drive-In rings a bell and it probably wasn't too far from Genie's Weini's. That was a pretty nice area to reside in, lower middle class but it was nice. I bet you remember Atlas Beverage's.

Yes, I do remember Atlas Pop very well. I think Genie's Weinie's moved out to the suburbs somewhere -- maybe Clinton Township or some such berg. But, in my opinion Genie's Weine's was really good when John and his brother ran it but most recently newer family members were running it and it was lousy. I went there days before it moved and I couldn't believe how bad it was! I have an old phone book and I didn't see anything about a place called the Wishing Well Drive-In and according to Greg Kowalski the Hamtramck Historian Mazur's was the 1st and only drive-in in the City of Hamtramck. Yes, it was a great place to live years ago back in the 1940s, 50s and 60's maybe the 70s but now it's somebody else's neighborhood and they can have it. I wish someone out there has a photo of the old Mazur's Drive-In and posts it on here.

I am not sure but I think the Conant Show was on the Detroit side of Conant. Wishing Well Drive-In was on the opposite side. I left that area many years ago and have no regrets.

The info I found, so far, on the Conant: 12027 Conant, 1929-1954, and it had 937 seats.

Hornwrecker; Thanks for the information. Mortalman, do you recall the Farnum Theater on Jos. Campau south of Hanley on the east side of the street. Here is another puzzle for you, the Casino Theater on Davison between Fenelon and Hasse streets.

Yes, I do remember the Casino Theater although it was before my time but the building stayed there long after the theater closed down. I think the building was used for other activities but I can’t remember what they were. I also remember the Farnum Theater on Jos Campau. Sometimes my younger brother and I would start off at the Martha Washington Theater and end up at the Farnum which would give my father fits and us, too once he found us. Here’s a couple for you, Stinger4me. Do you remember the Park Theater on Davison and Maine St.? And, if you do do you know the reason it closed down. How about the Jewel Theater in Hamtramck on Jos Campau. Do you know any of the history of that theater?

By the time I was old enough to be getting around the Casino Theater was closed. It was in our neighborhood and there were some plans to use it but those plans never materialized. It was very close to the Cherry Hill Inn, a neighborhood bar. The Park Theater and Jewel Theater have me stumped as well. My parents talked about a White Star Theater on Joseph Campau. I think it would have been in the vicinity of Joseph Campau and Lehman.

The Park Theater as I mentioned was on the corner of Maine St. and E.Davison Ave. at 2626 E. Davison Ave. It closed tragically in 1949 because some idiot threw a metal ball bearing out of the balcony hitting someone in the head killing them.
