I stumbled upon this memo early this morning on the way to other things...read and weep, folks. It isn't even a sieve, it's a fountain...or better yet, a sewer leak. Sure would be good to have the follow-ups on all these payoffs...what is the bet that most are frauds? Feeding at the trough, corruption from another direction... |

To be specific, I'm talking about the settled lawsuits or attempted lawsuits...but we've got an OLIVE delivery contract? The Big Diamond must really be into his martini's. |

Due to the fact the city is self-insured, and cannot get insurance because of it's piss-poor administrative practices (which go back to Coleman Young), you can basically sue the city and get paid. It's cheaper for the city to do this than to fight them all. These are probably not "payoffs" in the common sense, Gannon - but due to the ineptitude of the city government to have a real risk management office, as well as the rampant hiring of incompetents (and even worse, inability to fire them due to work rules), almost everyone who stubs their toe on a sidewalk can get some cash from the city government. This is just a sign of how broken Detroit really is. |

Detroit has always had a history for settling frivolous and needless lawsuits. And I face a misdemeanor for moving those damn barricades (laying on their sides), which were nearly completely blocking pedestrian flow, on one of those pedestrian islands on Jefferson. Go figure. Digitalvision nailed it. |

You know what the worst thing about all this is? The annihilation of respect for Detroit. Mayor Kilpatrick and others are showing how your supposed to act in Detroit. Leading by example, you know? Like how friends treat your house the way you treat it. If you keep the floor vacuumed, they might take of their shoes before walking in. If you throw garbage and food wrappers on the floor, they will too. If our leaders can steal from the city... well does anyone care if you take that pen from the clerk's office, or paper from the storage closet, or a little change while your emptying parking meters. Next time I here a suburbanite bad mouthing Detroit... for some reason I think I'll remember that the Mayor, through his actions, has possibly encouraged it. Mayore Kilpatrick is saying it's okay to disrespect Detroit... he really is. He might as well be laughing right along with those suburbanites. HE SURE AS HELL IS NOT A TRUE DETROITER! ...or at least, he's doing a horrible job of acting like it. |

Well said Sean! Reading that just made me mad and frustrated. Detroit is/was a beautiful city that is being tearfully dismantled by bad leadership and years of being corrupt. This could be a blessing for Detroit though. Leaders like Dave Bing may step up, showing their true leadership qualities. Leaders may step back if they thought Detroit was being run in a satisfactory manner. But when it is being run like crap, they need to lead and give true direction. I was born in Detroit, raised in Detroit, and moved out 10 years ago to the burbs. I want to go back, but for what reason? No schools, no grocery stores, blah blah blah...it makes sense to sit tight until one redeeming quality shines through. |

Guess if you aren't working you can just sue the city and get paid. Tried to get to details on some of the cases but couldn't. Did get details of this one settling for $525,000.00. Sucks Submitting reso. autho. Agreement to Entry of an Order of Dismissal for lawsuit of Eric Anderson and Tertrice Dallas by her Next Friend Terri Dallas vs City of Detroit; Wayne County Circuit Court Case No. 05-516242 NO; Law Department File No: 3038 (jkm) in the amount not to exceed $525,000.00, such amount shall represent a full and final settlement of any amounts due and owing to Plaintiff for any and all claims arising out of the incident which occurred on or about February 19, 2005, at or near Eastbound Jefferson Avenue at McDougal. |

On February 19, 2005, plaintiff Eric Anderson was driving eastbound on Jefferson Avenue at the intersection of McDougall in the city of Detroit. Anderson ran over an unbolted or loose sewer grate and it shot up underneath his vehicle. As a result, he lost control of his vehicle and his car struck a nearby curb causing injury to himself and Tertrice Dallas, a minor child. An unidentified witness standing at a nearby bus stop told Anderson, the manhole cover came up. |

If you are too dumb to get a good job, sue. Sam Bernstein probably gets a great ROI on the billboards in the city. |

Retroit, Didn't Kehinde Briggs run for an elected position recently? State rep maybe? I'll look it up... Later: found it! Wayne County 7th District County Commissioner ...and in 2007, he ran for Detroit School Board (Message edited by mschievous on August 16, 2008) |

I've said this 10 times on this forum: The problems of the city of Detroit would magically evaporate if the city had competent administration. The Black political class that controls the city has inflicted enormous harm on the city's residents who suffer daily with crappy services (most awfully the police and bus), high crime and economic isolation. What's tragic and ironic is you get called a racist if you say this but for the love of God its poor Blacks who suffer so terribly at the hands of these BASTARDS. <==Gave $500 to Freeman Hendrix in the last election (did all I could to avoid this cluster fxck). |

Ray, that's because it IS racist. It doesn't matter who it affects. It's a result and direct cause of past (and present) racism, that then affects the lower class. |
