Forbes, why do you hate Detroit?

quote:

Matt Woolsey and Jon Bruner of Forbes.com came up with a list of baseball most and least loyal fans. The Texas Rangers were selected as the most loyal with Los Angeles Angels fans coming in last. Tigers fans followed the Angels as the second worst.

I'm getting sick of Forbes and their gimmicky lists for everything. They are the Us Weekly of business publications anyways.

From the Yahoo article cited in the FP piece...

quote:

Methodology

Data for winning percentage and attendance are from Stats Inc. and are based on official Major League Baseball figures. Ticket data are average prices paid for tickets each year and are from Team Marketing Report’s Fan Cost Index. Using multiple regression analysis to determine how closely related winning percentage was to fan attendance, we controlled for the fluctuation of ticket prices and the boost in attendance as the result of having a new stadium, based on league-wide trends for teams that built new ball parks between 1991 and 2007.

The Montreal Expos, Washington Nationals, Arizona Diamondbacks, Florida Marlins, Colorado Rockies and Tampa Bay Rays were not considered due to a shortage of data and the statistical anomalies stemming from those being either new franchises, relocated franchises or a team that folded.

Our final rankings were a combination of two factors: How closely related fan attendance patterns were to winning percentage, after compensating for controls. We used what statisticians would note as the P > |t| value and checked for the mathematical confidence of that assessment; as well as the slope of the line as it went from zero wins to 162 possible wins.

Well, regression isn't a bad way of looking at this, but some variant of time series (e.g. ARIMA) is probably better because regression cannot capture the impact of a string of losing seasons.

The real objection to the kind of analysis presented in the article is that it is almost worthless except to provide fodder for guys arguing in bars. There's a sports marketing agency in town with a proprietary method for evaluating how deeply professional teams are ingrained in their community/market. The formula relies upon an interpretation of attendance & local broadcast audience as a proportion of the DMA. Also: licensed merchandise sales and relative penetration of other leisure options (e.g. other teams, casinos, zoos, etc.). Strategy-minded marketers don't base decisions on the kind of analysis presented by Forbes.

Trust me, Detroit: you do love your Tigers, and do love them more than do most other towns and their MLB teams.

They say everything & every place must have a bitch to carry the heavy load.

I guess Detroit is Forbes bitch. :-)

It's only our fault because if we had a better reputation, they wouldn't pick on us.

Brightmoor, eh. Were you loyal to the Tigers or did you spend more time browsing the dirty magazines at Shrubland than listening to Ernie Harwell?

I hear things.

Little help, Larry Tate: How can Detroit market its way out of this constant negativity?
